I bought the book because I'm loosing weight at the moment and therefore always looking for new recipes. It does contain a lot of good recipes but the portion sizes are mostly unrealisticly small and I've never been one for massive portions. Let's face it: 250g of dried pasta for 4 persons is not enough (every other cookbook says 100g per person which is about right). When you ignore the portion sizes, you immediately have the problem that suddenly the calorie content of your meal is rather high. If you don't have to keep an eye on how much you eat or believe that normal portions are "bad", there are a lot of nice and really tasty recipes like "Penne with Roasted Tomatoes, Garlic and White Beans" or "Salmon with Sweet and Spicy Rub". I tried ... Read More:

As mentioned previously it can be a bit troublesome getting to the "Nitty Gritty" in this book, but the wealth of information is very informative and I'm glad I forced my way through it.
I was only able to do this diet for 3 weeks, but the results in 3 weeks was totally mind-blowing. I used to feel ashamed looking in the mirror, but after about a week or so I couldn't pull myself away, the results are unbelievable.
I never told anybody I was doing this diet. I was always in the gym pumping iron but never could get the right diet and was a weakling when it came to burgers and chips. But after I showed my face after three weeks everyone I knew went crazy, "how did you do it, whats going on, wheres your other half," and within ... Read More:

This book is extremely comprehensive. There is something for everyone from sufferers, their families/friends, lay and health practitioners.
What I found particularly refreshing was the way the writers had explained the brain function (Chapter 3 - Mind Matters) in a clear (mostly) jargon free way, the importance of the talking therapies and the part that complementary therapies can contribute.
This is essentially a book of exercise advice - exercises and routines designed to help people with back problems. It's certainly comprehensive covering tons of stretches, pilates, swiss-ball, bodyweight, free weights, machines and cables machines.
It coveres a lot of non back exercises. It really is a manual of general exercise and health for people with bad backs rather than another set of exercises specifically for people with back problems.
My criticisms of it are that it isn't a lot of help to someone with a lot of current pain. There is only a little info on dealing with an acute back episode and most of the exercises are way too hard for someone struggling in their daily life. I'd have liked to see a very gentle remedial programme. But ... Read More:

An interesting book, but as I said in my title, it's quite hard going and sometimes I find myself switching off. I tend to like books that are in reference type sections and are easy to refer to, but this is a bit laboured. The author is obviously a clever guy, but I wanted a book which wasn't such a chore to read.

I think this book will be most helpful for people who have been suffering with back pain for a long period of time (months to years). Most back pain lasts only a short time, and if it persists, you probably either have a really serious medical problem (that is usually obvious) or there are psychological factors involved.
If you've been through the conventional medical system with your back pain for a long time with no satisfaction, have had many physical treatments (such as heat, massage, manipulation, etc.) with no relief, AND have had serious back pain issues ruled out, then I say it would be well worth your while to at least check out this book. While there are true physical causes of back pain that are not psychological, this book will make you think about ... Read More:

This has to be one of the best vegetarian books I've read but also, being a novice in the kitchen, it is great because the recipes are straightforward and understandable. Some of them use unusual ingredients that can be difficult to find but adaptation is part of the fun of cooking. This was recommended to me by a chef friend and he swears by it for the restaurant as well as at home. A must-buy!
