Have to be honest, it's rare I'll even bother to write a book review but feel compelled to here. After being a veggie for 20 years, I'm toying with the idea of becoming a vegan. I'm not one for being preached at and most 'activists' irritate me beyond description. Also, I'm not one for overblown American in your face type writing, so I was a little apprehensive about buying this. I needn't have been. It's superb. Honest, humorous, non preachy and debunks many myths including several perpetuated by vegans themselves. The authors include links for further info and resources which adds to the value too. If you're considering becoming a vegan or even just flirting with the idea, buy this book.

Beware. Not everyone on a low carb diet will find these recipes particularly low carb. There are many that include onions and flour (both have a very high GI). But in it's favour there are no Americanisms in sight, and at least the dishes taste wonderful!

The message of this book is short and simple.
If you become an under eating vegan you will lose weight.
This may be a very effective way of losing weight and may even make a lot of people feel better than they do on burgers and shakes but it is hardly news.
Dubious conclusions derived from apocryphal anecdotes are repeatedly presented as fact. Categoric statements raise the eyebrow of scepticism every other page or so.
Unintentionally funny but could raise the blood pressure of those lacking humour.

I found this to be a very interesting account of the nature of sleep. It took me a while to get through it, as it is jam-packed with information, but it is all very well organised and very readable. Each chapter is divided into little bitesized pieces of information, so it's a book that you can pick up and read for five minutes and then put down for a bit without needing to back-track. The author also backs up claims with full references to sleep studies and research.
The book takes you right from the very basics of what sleep actually is, the stages of sleep, what sleep is essentially for etc, to experiments regarding sleep loss (in animals and humans), to sleep patterns (the body clock, jetlag, larks & owls etc), to REM sleep and dreaming, ... Read More:

I bought this book after buying "Cook Yourself Thin" and making loads of those recipes which I have found fantastic. This book is not so much aimed at low-calorie recipes but is a bit more adventurous and ambitious. It's a very visually appealing book with lots of pictures and a handy thing is that at the end of most recipes there is a link to another recipe containing the same main ingredient so at least if you have half of something strange left you can use it for another meal.
Chapters include - packed lunches, not-so-naughty sweet treats, sleek and slender dinner party dishes, and one called "Quick Fixes to fit into that Little Black Dress or Bikini" which is very handy!
I am new to Alexander Technique but have been interested in it for some time now. This book is written so conversantly and is appealing at so many levels. I am now convinced to take up AT especially with the current buzz arising from the researches and articles published by the British Medical Journal about the benefits of learning AT. The cover of the book looks great!! Who is she?

I bought this book after having been converted to juicing by Amanda Hamilton. I was bored with the juices offered and wanted a bit more variety. But what I got in this book is so much more than expected. It has a great selection and all I have tried have been delicious but the vitamin breakdown, advice on particular ailments etc set this book apart.
Plus in answer to one of the other reviewers - yes I have seen real health benefits from juicing. Just from replacing breakfast with a juice, I lost tons of weight without feeling hungry, my skin has never been so healthy and other irritating things I thought I would just have to live with have disappeared.

I couldn't DISagree with the previous reviewer more. She has picked out a couple of really simple recipes - the book runs the gamut from really simple suggestions for quick snacks thru really quick recipes, to slighly longer ones, and 'foodie freindly' ones which take a little more time and preparation. there's a whole load of detail on oils and fats - what's good and bad which really cleared up some questions I have, good suggestions on using spices and herbs in place of salt and other stuff which was quite inspiring and really got me back into the creative spirit. Also it addresses the messy area of sweeteners - from sugar to artificial sweeteners and net carbs. Interesting info on flours and other grainy 'grey areas' for the whole carb / GL thing. In all it is ... Read More:

The book is presented in an old fashioned way, the pages are boring to look at and there are no pictures of the meals to inspire you to give them a try.
There are quite a lot of meals to try but there is not much variation in the style or ingredients used. There are also alot of canned or pre-made produce involved, which is fair enough but when the meal is in a can and you are told to add cheese and bake I'm sure these are things which we could have come up with on our own.
There is a bit of a lack of imagination but if you are after cheap meals which could feed a few people then you may want to pick this up, I would get a few other books as well though as I would find it incredibly difficult to rely on this one for all occasions.
