Let me use that old cliche, if you only buy one book on home wine-making then buy this one.
I have seven books on making wine. This is the one I always turn to first and the only one I have read cover to cover.
It is very readable, the only winemaking book I have with a sense of humour. It covers almost everything you could want. From the real basics, to really quite advanced stuff. It even has a potted history of winemaking.
But most of all the recipes never cease to turn out top notch wine, from bog-standard apple through unusual ones like kiwi to the use of herbs and spices.
Oh and don't be put off by the fact that it is of American origin. This usual puts me right off this kind of book. Not in ... Read More:

C J J Berry was a master on winemaking. I have bought and read most books on winemaking. This is the one I always turn back to. If you have to buy one book on homewinemaking this is the one! He begins my explaining the concepts and techniques of winemaking in easy to understand terms. He also explains the science behind the process but he is never confusing or condescending. I have never come across a problems which has not been solved by his troubleshooting section and his procedures are comprehensive but easy to follow. The remainder of the book takes you through a wine making year with suggestions, recipies and leaves you confident enough to experiment successfully. All recipes are in metric, imperial and US measures. He leaves you ... Read More:

Without a doubt the best wine book I have seen. Superbly laid out with easy to follow references. This book teaches practical knowledge on every page which comes to life in step by step tasting experiences. Michael Schuster has a great knack of bringing enjoyment to this art. The first book I have read that explains why a certain wine matches a certain food. I just want to read, learn and taste more.

A great read, particularly in its sections on Africa (the place about which Stewart Lee Allen is most respectful and passionate) and its pivotal role in the history of coffee. Allen is entertaining, adventurous, fun-loving, and never takes himself too seriously. Although I disagree with his claim that a certain global coffee chain serves good coffee and although some sections work better than others - Allen seems to be running out of steam towards the end, as though his mission has exhausted even him - and although the editing of the text could be better at times... these are essentially small niggles in what is a five-star read. I learned a lot from this book, which made me want to drink even more coffee than I do already, and I would entirely agree with ... Read More:

I wanted to learn more about wine and happened to see Vincent Gasnier on a TV programme promoting this book. It manages to be both a useful introduction to the world of wine appreciation (which can appear intimidating to the novice) and also a good reference guide to wine types from around the world. There are useful sections on appreciating wine, buying and storing wine, and matching wine with food. It's well written and comprehensive and I've already learnt a great deal from it. Excellent
