For the technical side of brewing this book covers what you need to know! I also have the "complete joy of homebrewing" which is also a great book and lot of fun to read, but to be honest it is not as up to date as this book. I recommend this book together with "designing great beer" - with this set you'll be able to brew the most common types of beer with very good results.

C J J Berry was a master on winemaking. I have bought and read most books on winemaking. This is the one I always turn back to. If you have to buy one book on homewinemaking this is the one! He begins my explaining the concepts and techniques of winemaking in easy to understand terms. He also explains the science behind the process but he is never confusing or condescending. I have never come across a problems which has not been solved by his troubleshooting section and his procedures are comprehensive but easy to follow. The remainder of the book takes you through a wine making year with suggestions, recipies and leaves you confident enough to experiment successfully. All recipes are in metric, imperial and US measures. He leaves you ... Read More:

The best thing about this book is that it is written by two real wine experts, who remember well what it was like to be a "wine newbie."

Ed is a former teacher who became interested, in wine, and met Mary at an Italian wine tasting in New York City. Two years later, they married, and formally merged their wine cellars and wine libraries. Ed has co-authored six wine books, and is the sole author of Champagne for Dummies. He also writes for Wine Enthusiast Magazine and Decanter.

Mary entered the retail wine business right out of college, when she accepted a position with the Italian Trade Commission. Today she runs a wine school based in New York City called International Wine Center, which mainly trains wine professionals. ... Read More:

.

Thirty years ago this book could not have been written. With the increasing ascendancy of the New World wine makers and in particular the influence of the Davis campus of the University of California, viticulture and oenology are now rigorous, scientific and commercially oriented professions. This is reflected in the "Oxford Companion to Wine" which has to be the most comprehensive, authoritative and accessible resource dealing with all aspects of the world of wine.

Jancis Robinson who edited this encyclopedia of wine is a highly respected wine writer and educator. She is also very well credentialled, holding the prestigious title of "Master of Wine".

The real power of this book as an information source is the very effective ... Read More:

Protz is well-known as a beer man and writes well - if a little predictably (I seem to have read some of this before in some of his other, many, tomes). But the pictures are fabulous and if you're a beer bore, a ticker or just fanatical about real ale, you'll love this on your coffee table, to make you yearn for a decent pint (or bottle) rather than the usual rubbish down the local.
However I do think there are better recent beer books - for instance Adrian Tierney-Jones' Big Book of Beer - produced also by CAMRA - is pretty damn excellent and very informative (I learned lots of new stuff from it). Also Pete Brown's Three Sheets to the Wind for one man's obsessive hunt for beer around the world.
So - this one's quite good, but there are better and ... Read More:

I get bought loads of 'winey' stuff as I am into wine, so I was quite pleased to get this book. As a guide it works well enough, although I feel that it should feature 200 or so wines rather than the 100 it concentrates on. The style itself is not bad but I get the impression that this wine guide is about showing that wine is cool and fun and not enough time is spent reviewing more wines. Many of the wines reviewed are a bit pricey too.

I was left dissapointed by this book which seems to assume that good food in London can only be found in affluent or trendy areas, and mostly in expensive delis or restaurants. I really felt that they missed a trick to really unearth the jems of London's food scene but opted instead for the obvious. For example, coverage for South East London is woeful, despite it being home to any number of excellent pan-asian and caribean shops and restaurants, as well as some of the best British food from great roasts, to fish and chips and pie and mash. You can only assume that the researchers didn't like the idea of Jerk Chicken in Catford. The cynic in me would also like to know how many of the establishments listed are somehow a part of the Conran empire. All in all, a bit poor, ... Read More:

Finally, I've found somebody who has told me that dieting doesn't work and actually PROVED to me that he's right! I never would have believed it but I've found the solution to my health and weight problems all in one book (or two - because I found the 7 lbs in 7 days juicing plan an absolute 'must'). This man talks little rubbish, doesn't pussy-foot around with words and makes complete and utter sense just as long as you're open to admitting it! You really cannot disagree with anything here. Whether you follow the plan itself or not, I would defy anybody who reads this book not to think twice before diving into that packet of biccies or frying up a pound of sausages - and perhaps (even hopefully??) choosing an alternative.

This is not a tree-huggy, evergreen, ... Read More:

I have both this and the 3rd edition, and I would strongly recommend you to have a recent copy in your collection, but not to rush out and buy the new edition every time it appears. The 3rd edition had >1,000 pages and this one >1,600 pages, I suppose the next edition will have >2,000 pages - which ever way you look at it, it's fantastic value for money in terms of /kg. I know that much is said for and against Parker, but the point-rating system and the well-written text makes it an interesting and useful book. I have read some reviews that praise Parker for opening up new wine producing areas, new markets, and new tasting options. Other reviews condemn him for pushing for one type of taste and for inflating prices. I look at what the book gives me. Firstly, I like the descriptions ... Read More:
