Without a doubt the best wine book I have seen. Superbly laid out with easy to follow references. This book teaches practical knowledge on every page which comes to life in step by step tasting experiences. Michael Schuster has a great knack of bringing enjoyment to this art. The first book I have read that explains why a certain wine matches a certain food. I just want to read, learn and taste more.

I'd been home winemaking for a while and had just been introduced to and developed a taste for real ale when I came across the original edition of this book. It has a recipe for Greene King Abbot Ale which at the time was my favourite beer but unavailable in Liverpool so purchase was immediate! To cut a long story short this was the start of my full mash grain brewing that I've found to be the most enjoyable hobby. I'm still learning 30 years later! I found that most of the recipes in this book produced good results although not always that close to the real thing. I know that Dave Line over-estimated the likely efficiencies achievable by home brewers but I don't remember this causing me any great problems. When my extracts came out low I just relaxed, ... I wanted to learn more about wine and happened to see Vincent Gasnier on a TV programme promoting this book. It manages to be both a useful introduction to the world of wine appreciation (which can appear intimidating to the novice) and also a good reference guide to wine types from around the world. There are useful sections on appreciating wine, buying and storing wine, and matching wine with food. It's well written and comprehensive and I've already learnt a great deal from it. Excellent

the amusing introduction to this book, full of family anecdotes and bon mots, sets the tone very well. it's a fun read, each recipe prefaced with a little description of the dish. I've already cooked a few and found them simple to prepare and most importantly absolutely delicious!! I would definitely reccommend this book for anyone - I love cooking but even if I didn't, the 'with booze' aspect would definitely appeal! The recipes are mouth watering, and it's just the right size to dip in to without being too daunting. a real treat, not to be missed.

Great fun, informative and inspiring, I haven't finished it yet and I can't wait to get brewing! Leon sounds like the kinda guy you just want to be mates with, love the pore-boy stuff, great way of hashing together the basic stuff for brewing and bottling, of course none of us would dare to hazard the making of a still!! Overall a great read laced with good humour

The author and photographer’s collaboration gives us a work that vividly portrays Scotland and its whiskies. Written and visual images rather than details such as lists of distilleries and bottlings are in these pages. It is a perfect read while enjoying a fine single malt. The greatest negative is that it is too easy to keep reading and enjoying on into the third or fourth glass. A good read when planning a visit. There is useful information and material that doesn’t always find its way into guidebooks. The descriptions evoke clear images that are amplified by the photographs; helpful when planning for the memorable experience of enjoying a countryside and its distilleries. For those who enjoy a read about Scotland and its whisky ... Read More:

I agree with most of the above comments on this book. It certainly opened my eyes to the exhaustive process of wine making and French Beaurocracy! I certainly shall not quibble about the price of a good wine again!!!
Patricia is a complete inspiration and a very good writer.
I am so pleased to see (from her website) that she appears to be going from strength to strength.
She describes the people in this book so well that when there is a death, you feel it, and the news that one in particular died made me cry.
