I'm very happy that Darina Allen compiled this book. It sets the scene of a way of life that my father used to tell me about - teacakes cooked on the griddle, potato cake, real Irish stew - and, of course, champ! In a wonderful introduction, Allen describes the advent, if you can call it that, of so-called "fancy shop-bought things" and how this began the decline of traditional recipes. What follows is a labour of love for Allen, a compilation to salvage over 300 recipes that reflect the Irish way of life, its farming heritage and cooking skills. The book is complete with wonderfully evocative photography and notes. And having tried some of them, I can vouch that the recipes are easy and tasty.

Having visited India about 30 times in the last decade, I am prompted to revisit Keith Floyd after having seen several of the new (2007) series of "Rhodes Around India" on UK TV Food. Gary is all so serious, like a fish out of water, and always trying to second guess the Indian chefs who are there to teach him how to cook authentic Indian grub. Keith bubbles over with enthusiasm and wit: he clearly loves the country, and this is reflected in this book. Not only are Keith's television programmes on India so much more entertaining and informative than the Rhodes series, but the book really does translate the on-screen cooking into easy-to-follow and helpful recipes, of great variety. His introduction is a great non-culinary bonus. There have been some rather ... Read More:

This is a fantastic book, the recipes are excellent, well laid out, some recipes are more fattening than others, but there is very clear nutritional information, on each of the recipes, to help you make the right choice.
A great achievement, using Splenda, and it works very well, well done Antony Worrall Thomson. Fully recommended book.

If you want the hardback version, I suggest you buy it through the US site, amazon.com, new or used, and ship it over -- the UK price is a disgrace. Or consider the paperback version. :(

I had not read anything by Ainsley prior to this and neither watch TV cookery shows! But I do own a number of 'comprehensive' books from the USA about BBQs.
None is as easy to read or filled with such good ideas for marinades, sauces, salads etc.
I am not easily impressed but this book has impressed me and some of my neighbours in Spain who have asked me to buy them a copy!
