I have baked the oatcakes, scone pizza and the ingenious Victoria Sponge - (brilliant recipe - easiest ever - start by warming the eggs in their shells and no tedious creaming together of fat and sugar - just whisk together the flour and sugar - perfect cake at end of all this!). My daughter age 9 won second prize at the local show with the Rock bun recipe - She is convinced she could have had first had I taken the buns out of the oven sooner!!!! My mother however has had the best results of all of us at the show, competing as part of the WRI and achieving a near perfect mark for the Strawberry Tarts! What more can I say!

This little book conjures up for me my childhood. The recipes are ancient and are usually memorised by the mamma of the house, so its nice to see them written down in black and white for everyone to make. The biscotti are italian classics from all around Italy, the biscotti are easy to make following the easily understandable text. These are biscuits you may find in an italian patissceria shop, they are good for dessets at the end of a meal, and also good with a big mug of cappuccino or espresso when friends come round for a good gossip. The book is well written and the illustrations in colour are eyecatching and attractive to look at making the text easier to read. I have given quite a few of these as stocking fillers and it is always well ... Read More:

To me a recipe book means dishes made from basic ingredients, but saddly several of the recipes in this book use cake mixes which will make no sense to any reader outside the US, or indeed future cooks "yellow cake mix" is one typical example. Others do start from basic ingredient so it isn't a complete waste of time, but the cake mix type of recipe makes it much less useful than a recipe book should be !
I read this from cover to cover in one sitting. It is an absolute delight. We should all eat more trifle. I'm looking forward to other titles in the English Kitchen series.

This book brought back all the pleasant memories of childhood and helping my Mom bake cookies from the recipes in her Betty Crocker Cookbook. This book is excellent if you want to bake the best cookies and bars in the world with easy step by step instructions, helpful hints, and even great colour photos showing you how your cookies should look! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to bake cookies like you had when you were a child.

This book was a great disappointment. It should really be called Diabetic sweets, because more than half its content is given to what we English would call sweets ( candies for the Americans ).There are very few actual dessert recipes and most of those are classic recipes slightly adapted for diabetics in a way which any intelligent reader could have worked out for themselves. If you are looking for interesting desserts and puddings this is not the book for you.
