Food and Drink : Planet Organic: Baby and Toddler Cookbook

Planet Organic: Baby and Toddler Cookbook

by: Lizzie Vann

Best Selling > Food and Drink > Vegetarian and Vegan Cooking

At first I thought this book was brilliant but actually it's got incorrect information in it which could be a danger to your child and I couldn't trust it!!

In the 4-7 month category it has recipes for oats and meat. If you're weaning your child before 6 months you should know that you cannot give meat to them and only gluten free oats, which it doesn't mention.

I wouldn't trust this book and will not be using it. Unfortunately I didn't get to look at it until it was too late to return.

This book is not aimed at the British. Much of the references to wild foods are american, and as a beginer in wild foods I found this book too assuming. It is simply a recipe book. The subtitle 'foraging through the seasons' implied to me that the book would give some guide to the foods involved in the recipes, however there are only occasionaly snippits of extra information. Although this book is not what I expected, it might suit someone more advanced in understanding wild foods, and probably from America.

Here's the problem with this book: A friend told me about the macrobiotic diet, explaining that it was about eating local, fresh foods with an emphasis on grains and legumes. Okay, fine. Sounds good. I want some recipes. So, I bought this book (and several others) thinking I was going to get some useful, kitchen friendly recipes.

Nope. That's not it at all.

Essentially, even though they say that the idea is to eat locally grown, fresh foods, what nearly all the recipes call for are foods that you can only find in health food stores or specialty shops. Most of them are Japanese foods that are unfamiliar to the average Westerner.

More specifically, my problem is this: as an American living in France, I am delighted ... Read More:

Food and Drink : Delia's Vegetarian Collection

Delia's Vegetarian Collection

by: Delia Smith
September 07, 2006
Best Selling > Food and Drink > Vegetarian and Vegan Cooking

Delia has fallen into the meat-eaters' trap of thinking she has to replace meat and fish with dairy products or eggs in the same quantities. If you used this book as your main source of recipes your chloresterol levels would go through the roof. There are whole sections on cheese and egg recipes and most of the others feature a lot of full-fat dairy products as well. You would also need a palatial kitchen to house the myriad of specialised ingredients and equipment required (no wonder that she has her own range of cookware).
I admit that some of the recipes are very delicious, if somewhat time-consuming to make, and the instructions are clearly written. However, as a vegetarian cook for a vegetarian family, I found a lot of it unapproachable.

Although it focuses on meatless cookery, this impressive volume belongs in the kitchens of vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. It is packed with practical information and clearly written, appealing recipes for simple everyday meals as well as for entertaining. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced cook, "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone" is bound to be a very useful addition to your library.

Also recommended: "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen", by Sonia Uvezian. If you are fond of Mediterranean food (as I am), you will find this book a revelation. It is filled with extraordinary vegetarian recipes, many of them not available elsewhere.
