Three main points for this review:

1. Delicious, reliable and easy-to-follow
2. Completely banished my meat-cravings
3. A very good book for Ayurvedic cooking

This book is full of delicious recipies, some traditional, some unusual but all completely reliable. All of the twenty or so that I have tried so far have been exceptional, requiring no tinkering at all, which is a minor miracle as I am a novice cook. In fact, at the second meal I have ever cooked for guests (broccoli soup, tofu in coconut milk and baked pears) I was asked how long I had been cooking! It was even more amazing considering the first meal had been the week before!

As an ex-meat-eater, I had experienced meat cravings since ... Read More:

Food and Drink : The Gate Vegetarian Cookbook: Where Asia Meets the Mediterranean (Mitchell Beazley Food)

The Gate Vegetarian Cookbook: Where Asia Meets the Mediterranean (Mitchell Beazley Food)

The 'Mediterranean meets Asia' tag had me hooked at once - I thought I'd found my ideal cookery book. However, I found I really could not get on with this one at all. I found the recipes fiddly [ and I do not think I am a lazy cook ] and they frequently did not live up to their promise. I actually culled the book in a couple of months- a first for me. I have since bought two excellent books by Claudia Roden: Arabesque and The Book of Jewish food. Although not vegetarian, I have got far more use out of them, and would recommend those to anyone with an interest in Middle Eastern cookery.

Quite honestly the best vegetarian cookbook you could ever buy. Full of recipes from all over the world, it doesn't contain any of the boring same recipes you'll find everywhere else. Instead, it has all the recipes of the dishes I'd order from my local takeaway - from loads of different cultures. This will be passed to my kids and hopefullly to theirs.

This book is good if you've just become vegetarian and don't know where to start but now I'm more experienced I find it relies too heavily on meat substitutes, eg, soy mince, veggie sausages, for my own tastes. If you're going vegetarian for health reasons or you avoid processed foods I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise fine and it has some good ideas, especially the barbeque section.

As an novice allotment owner, the book is very informative, and contains listings and notes on most of the varieties of each type of vegetable. The varieties are readily found in seed packets at any garden centre, and give advice as to which is best for certain conditions and yields, etc.

The recipes are very good. The Irish colcannon is so simple.

A great book even if you only want to grow a few things in your garden.

This is a wonderful book - great recipes, lovely photos, and fascinating material about biodynamics, a kind of 'premium organic' farming that is spreading fast. It also has a lot of stuff about food politics and nutrition. But mostly it is full of a good and original selection of recipes. Highly recommended.

During our last trip to Mexico my wife and I ate in the author's San Cristobal restaurant, La Casa del Pan. We are not vegetarians, but we do try to eat meatless meals fairly frequently. We loved the food and immediately bought several copies of the cookbook to share with friends. We also enjoyed meeting the owner/author, who is a musician as well, and frequently hosts informal musical evenings at the restaurant.

Few Mexicans are vegetarian (at least not by choice--sadly many Mexicans can seldom afford to eat meat) and most Mexican cookbooks are heavily meat-oriented, even though many recipes are easily adapted to meatless cooking. Mexican cooking can also be high in fat, although the heavy dishes Americans often think of are NOT the everyday ... Read More:
