It is, of course, beautifully written and from this aspect streets ahead of his competitors. This is not a book full of gobs of blockbuster fruit flavours, but of understated, evocative prose. But at times it does teeter on the brink of becoming pompous - all those black tie dinners with the wine aristocracy drinking impossibly ancient bottles, and endless comments on the very old bottles he has in his almost medieval cellar at his mansionly home. On the subject of Robert Parker he is also pretty outspoken, and perhaps needlessly so, and it begins ... Read More:

Brilliant travelogue based on a trip around the vineyards of England and Wales in the summer of 2006. Very detailed with over 300 vineyards from the tiny to the large covered and it's clearly an independent guide as he pulls no punches when he finds something awry. Tasting notes are straightforward and not having been an English wine buff before, I learned a lot from these regarding grape types and styles of wine. The book lacks maps but is none the worse for it as there are plenty of contact details including map references. It is also beautifully presented and copiously illustrated in full colour. Highly recommended.
