Food and Drink : The Wines of Chablis and the Grand Auxerrois

The Wines of Chablis and the Grand Auxerrois

An up to date survey of this region was needed and this concise guide provides it. There is a good survey of Chablis putting the wine into its historical context and charting its ups and downs over the centuries. The domaine profiles are informative (and provide a good balance of detail) as are the vintage notes. A very useful reference book and well written.

A fabulous read. Unlike many other vegan authors, Erik Markus makes the case for veganism (extremely well) by stating the facts. The book is all the more powerful for the matter of fact approach Markus adopts. Buy it now. If you're thinking about becoming vegan, this book will confirm time and again, that you'll be making the right choice.

I've yet to find a book that can come close to C. J. J. Berry's 'First Steps in Winemaking', which is excellent for both beginner and established brewer alike.

'125 Unusual Recipes' makes a good effort though, with a good introduction detailing techniques and equipment followed by a comprehensive list of weird and wonderful recipes which you are unlikely to encounter elsewhere else!

One thing to be wary of is that the quantities given are in U.S. imperial measurers, which will require conversion to UK units if you intend to fill a 4.5 litre demijohn.

REAR COVER QUOTE from JANE GRIGSON:-
"Every time we begin to feel fussed by the cookery elaborators with their flashy tricks and colour photos, we can restore confidence by returning to Elizabeth David."
From Artemis Cooper's 'Writing at the Kitchen Table', pg 307 - 'An Omelette and a Glass of Wine' delighted Elizabeth's legion of fans. Jane Grigson praised it for including all the dishes most closely associated with her, Spiced Beef, Salted Welsh Duck and Syllabub.

This book is written with a great deal of love and understanding of sherry and the people who made the trade in it so successful. It is a fascinating insight into how the popularity of sherry developed, and how the winemakers have coped with change and development. The fifth edition is as fresh as the first, written after the author's stay in Jerez in 1956.

I recently toured the Champagne region, having booked hotels and chosen destinations on the internet; I had a superb time and fell in love with the towns, villages and steeply-sloping chalk hills of La Champagne. I bought this book on my return hoping to learn a little more about it - I should have bought it before, as it's an excellent touring guide to the region.

Champagne has been my favourite drink for a number of years and this book has enriched my appreciation no end. It's written for someone who is planning on visiting the region from England (most of the travel directions are based on how to get there from the UK), and suggests various routes through the champagne villages and towns. The best bit about the book though is the informative ... Read More:

Wishart's approach is both novel and practical. By classifying whiskies across a spectrum of tastes and aromas, it's a doddle to identify whiskies similar to ones that you know you already like. Or, indeed, to find a malt different to those you already drink.

And if you're thinking of setting up a whisky tasting session, Wishart guides you through the choice of a range of suitable malts.

Clearly illustrated, genuinely informative. Ideal for newcomers to malts as well as old hands looking for a (reasonably) objective classification.
