I approached this CD with caution given the hype that has surrounded recent appearances of both singers. I must confess that contrary to my expectations I was deeply moved by the singing here which recalls other great operatic couples of the past, Callas and di Stefano, Tebaldi and del Monaco. The recording has rarely been far from my CD player for the past two weeks.
As with the legendary couples from the past, there is something uneven about the two voices. Netrebko's voice is not a warm voice but is beautifully focused, always on the note and has to my ears a dark unjuicy quality. It is a stunning voice. Villazon, by contrast, has a voice that could hardly be described as beautiful the way that Corelli's, Pavarotti's or Domingo's ... Read More:

Anna Netrebko's `Opera' album I think successfully builds some bridges to satisfy today's broad range of opera listeners.
There are a growing number of singers who are taking on opera music and including it in their repertory, often to the dismay of those dedicated followers of `real' opera who believe it should be left to those able to perform an entire on-stage theatre performance. Undeniably though there is a public desire to hear short, familiar opera arias and excerpts which provide enjoyment as stand alone pieces, and I am fully in favour of any artist, whether truly qualifying as an opera singer or not, taking on anything providing they do it well - a good singer can sing a three minute aria, an opera singer is required ... Anna Netrebko is a great operatic soprano.
The statement is fortified by her riveting acting onstage and her ability to capture audience's fancy by her striking stage presence.
This is a great star soprano.
Having said that, while she does have the making of a great singer, being endowed with a beautiful dark-hued lyrical soprano with a good range and large volume, she has the greatest draw-back of being 'beautifully shallow' in her characterisations.
Nor do I think that coloratura is her cup of tea. I still opine that her Russian operatic repertoire as she sang it in the days at Russia at Kirov represents the best of Anna Netrebko, and not the Italian bel cantos or Verdi. The Italianate flavour is lacking, the sound production ... Read More:

The `Russian Album', released in 2006, is Anna Netrebko's debut solo recording with long friend, teacher and conductor of the Orchestra of the Mariinsky theatre, Valery Gergiev. It's also her solo debut album with the Deutsche Grammophon label.
Russian composers of opera have not enjoyed such popularity, in recent years at least, as those by the great Italians such as Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti and Rossini. Russian opera emerged during the early 1800's, at a time when the European composers completely dominated the field, and used elements of Russian folklore, traditions and native melodies to produce a distinctive sound.
So it's only natural that a Russian opera singer should feel compelled to celebrate and show off some ... Read More:

Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon, dubbed the 'Golden Couple' pair up for an album of beautiful operatic duets. Both singers possess glorious voices and each selection/scene captures the listener, with even two unfamilar items alongside the standard repertoire. I urge people to rather purchase the limited edition package that contains a bonus DVD, which shows the making of the album, as well as the music video for the Boheme duet, directed by Vincent Patterson.

La Netrebko may be winning all the headlines, but this disc displays her faults all too clearly.
Her technique is flawed - no trills, smudged runs; her high notes unreliable (or simply flat in some cases);her tone rather heavy and slavic for the repertoire. None of this would matter if she had the intellect to bring the music alive, and knowledge of the necessary languages. But on this evidence, she hasn't. She may aquire those things. I hope she does - it IS a gorgeous voice. But here the music fails to sparkle and live as it should - her phrasing is peculiar and her diction poor, her style, in short is unidiomatic.
Her Russian album is a different matter and shows her at her best. But she makes heavy weather of the Romantic repertoire ... Read More:
