What more needs to be said about what is probably one of the top five, perhaps top three rap albums of all time. It's just packed to bursting point with beats and ryhmes that are as "FRESH" today as they were twenty odd years ago. If you have any respect for classic old school rap you have to own this album!

When I first stumbled across this album, back when I was about 10, I took it back to the shops a week later. I had heard 'Sabotage' and thought I'd try it, but it sounded like a mess.
About two years later, after slowly purchasing other Beastie Boys releases and beginning to appreciate different syles of music as a whole, I picked it up again. I began to get it a little bit more with each listen, until it became arguably my favorite album of all time up to this present day.
I wrote a review in 2003, but thought I'd right another one as that particular one doesn't do this amazing record justice. So to the record...'Sure Shot' IS hip hop. You will not find a more straight up hip hop cut on any album by anyone, especially not in todays rap ... Read More:

Here we have the definative collection of the best (white) hip-hop band ever and probably in the top 5 of any race along with Wu, Public Enemy and Run DMC.
This is what I would say is probably the coolest best-of I've heard in years, that is chock full of songs that you would instanly recognise and some you probably didn't know were by the Beasties'!
It starts off with 'So What You Want' a rocky rap tune that is one of my favourate songs by this group that instantly shows them as innovators of the game with no fear as they tear through any beat.
The interesting thing I found about this album is you could listen to most of it and not be able to tell when it was recorded because they all still sound fresh as they did when ... Read More:

I have been listening to the Beastie Boys for many years and have come to treasure albums such as Ill communication and Check your head. I have listened to those 2 albums over and over again, as well as watching the Sabotage video (truly great) many times. To those people familiar with those 3 works, intermingled with all the fan favourites like Sabotage etc. are some truly chilled out pieces; just percussion, strings and keyboard.
For years I have been trying to track down all of these instrumental versions and now here they are on one album.
To those not accustomed to the full repertoire of the Beastie Boys, these tracks may or may not be a welcomed change. They feel more like the Beastie Boys unplugged, just chilling out and truly expressing ... Read More:

When I first heard this album I thought it was a bit weird. I listened to it again and a realized that its meant to be weird! But the really amazing thing is that this ( when listened closely ) actually makes a lot of sense and relaxes you. Some of the songs sound like your in a lift but they are so good that you woulden't mind being stuck in a lift with this album playing. I intend to buy more beastie's albums to keep me melo and keep my mind at ease. Some songs make you laugh, some you sing along to some you dance to. Rock, Jazz, Hip-hop this album has everything and succeds in mixing it into a blend of brilliance that everyone can enjoy.
If you do not own this album buy it right away!!!

Firstly, for any spelling/grammar pedants, the title I chose for this review is not a typo, but a useage of the title of a track from this album.
Now we have got that out of the way, I was given this album as a completely random gift. I am not really into The Beastie Boys but this is just an instrumental album.
The instrumentals are very similar to what you'd expect from The Beasties, just obviously you're able to really hear them better as that's all there is to listen to.
I can easily imagine this being played in a cool bar in Hoxton or somewhere. It's a very solid album and also very chilled and relaxed and relaxing. Each track flows effortlessly into the next and it's a pleasure to listen to and unwind to.

Hmmm. The first upsetting Beastie release. I read the negative reviews on amazon.com (much more reviews over there than on the uk site) but still went ahead and bought this album. Bad move. There are frankly no tunes on this record!! The Beasties include all the lyrics, an attempt to possibly take your mind off the fact there is no music to enjoy? Basically this is just the boys rapping over lame beats. Over and over. Each track sounds the same and I got bored halfway through the album and switched it off - I mean, how bad is that? One of the things I like about the B.Boys is that their albums have variety - funk/rap/rock/punk/disco/hip hop but this album is hip hop 100%. I knew that before I bought it so I wasn't put-off by that fact, I was put-off because each song sounds lame. It's ... Read More:
