She had a hit called "1980" a few years back but I dismissed her as a one hit wonder and to be honest I wasn't blown away by her raps. When I heard she was working with John Legend I decided to sample it at the music store and realised that I had been completely wrong about her, she is a singer who raps not the other way around. More than that is that she has a beautiful voice.
When I heard the George Michael sample on "No Substitute Love" it was over, I had to get the album. The album is so nostalgic to me, I don't know if it is the samples e.g. Bob Marley on "So Much Out The Way" or it is the fact that she reminds me so much of Lauryn Hill.
The multitasking (rapping, writing & singing), the eclectic sounds (Reggae, ... Read More:

After recently caning Estelle's dreadful follow up single (No Subsitute Love) in another review, I thought it was only fair to also give the girl a break and credit where its due. I have to confess that I'm not a lover of R&B, but some of the songs (like this one) do stand out from the crowd in whats currently a very R&B dominated pop music world. Its a bit different from most the other stuff you hear and indeed very catchy. Certainly one of the best pop songs this year without a doubt, although unfortunately thats no massive achievement seeing as the quality of pop music seems to have gone very downhill since the introduction of music downloads and the decline of 'Top of the Pops'. No one seems bothered about the singles charts anymore and unfortunately pop ... Read More:

When a song hits you as instantly likable then you know you're onto something special. Estelle's brilliant new single is one such song, a slick modern pop/r&b track featuring an ace contribution from Kanye West too.
Estelle's voice serves as the centrepiece of the song, coming across effortless in its soothing tones and casual flirtiness. The lyrics are brilliant too, the beat perfect for putting a spring in your step. Radio stations leapt on this track and it's not hard to see why, it's one of those songs that defines a year, hanging around in the charts for ages. A perfect introduction to her new album 'Shine', this version of the single is a one-track CD and comes in a card sleeve.
All the songs make you feel good. "Go Gone" is a particular favourite aswell as "1980" which tells the story of her life in a creative way. Im beginning to think that her first album is better than her second but since i've played it more times maybe it is not a fair comparison. Needless to say both are amazing, it's great to see a successful british R&b/rap artist which is actually talented.

I love this CD, I am only 40 so not the usual type of buyer for Don Estelle, but this guy had a voice that brings you out in goosebumps.
Buy this CD you will not be disappointed.

We had this album at home when I was a young boy. Christmases were always magical at home and this LP was the soundtrack to those times. I used to listen to it over and over again. We'd all listen to the album when putting the tree up. For me the thing that makes this album so special is that it cotains traditional songs and carols - the sort of things we'd be singing at school at the time rather than the pop Christmas songs. Don Estelle has a superb voice - you'd be amazed if you only know him from It Ain't 'Alf Hot Mum. If you have young children and want them to know more Christmas songs other than Slade and The Darkness then I recommend this album whole heartedly!
