I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? Probably as epiphanic as being a white guy in mid 50's Chicago and having the nerve to wander into the Dew Drop Inn and hearing Muddy, Wolf, or later, ... Read More:

Where is 'Greeny'? I just can't believe it. The most stunning, emotional bluesy Peter Green song and it is not on this otherwise brilliant album. I now have to dig deeper and purchase the double CD version which is quite a bit more expensive just for this one track alone.
Why, oh why, oh why?

I bought this on vinyl (twice! I wore one out) and on CD (albeit in original format without the 2 extra tracks). This album ranks with the Beano one as a 60s classic: Mick Taylor is brilliant (and still only 20 years old - downhill from now on....) and the whole thing is a masterpiece of ensemble playing. I find myself coming back to it regularly, nearly 40 years on.

One friend described it as a perfect record for making love - rumbustious start, mood switches through the middle, and a drawn-out langourous ending. Never tried it, but I can see where he was coming from.

This is the original release, plus 4 tracks that are available elsewhere.
The album was a change of direction for Mayall, to a more jazz-based sound in many areas. However, there is plenty for the blues fan to enjoy as well, particularly in the playing of Mick Taylor, who plays with a maturity well beyond his years (he was 19 when it was recorded!). Every member of the band is a seasoned pro, and that much is obvious by listening to all their contributions. The Bare Wires Suite, although slightly self-indulgent in places, generally works well, and the remainder of the album contains some very strong songs, all written by Mayall himself.

This is another must-have album for all fans of British blues-based music at it's best.

Superb album, some great songs and god knows how many moments that send a real chill down the spine. Also has some of Clapton's best playing including a fantastic Les Paul sound, which became the "woman tone" that has influenced who knows how many people. Great songs, great playing, great voices - a genuine, complete classic.

I bought this on vinyl all those years ago, played it to death for months and promptly forgot about it! I remember thinking it was ever so slightly disappointing after the overwhelming brilliance of the Clapton and Green albums. Mick Taylor's playing was great but seemed slightly stilted compared to his illustrious predecessors. How wrong can you be! "Oh Pretty Woman" is the definitive version in my book, "Snowy Wood" is a guitar instrumental par excellence and Taylor's contribution is outstanding throughout. That's not to mention the tight brass section and Mayall's astonishing harmonica solo on "Checkin' Up on my Baby". Even Mayall's usually reedy voice achieves real passion on Buddy Guy's "My Time After Awhile" and shows remarkable sensitivity with his tribute "Death ... Read More:

I got this double cd in a supermarket sale (!) almost for free, and it is one of my favourites for the moment. Contrary to the previous reviewer, I think Mayall's voice is quite good and distinctive, he is just great at 70 years old. What IS true is the comparatively poor performance of Mick Taylor, really not up to his fame. Even if Clapton is unexplainably short changed in the mixing (still worse on the DVD !!), his solos are quite good and he did not disappoint me at all. While Buddy stands his ground before the big guys Mick and Eric.
Overall this is a smashing concert, with a very good set of songs and great players. Happy birthday John !!

At times intense, at others relaxing, this live, semi-acoustic, jazz-blues album stands in John Mayall's discography as second only to the 'Beno album'. This isn't that loud, messy jazz; this is relaxing and at times even beautiful.

The musician's interplay is wonderful, with guitar, flute, saxophone and, of course, mouth organ melodically harmonizing. Mayall's singing is probably the best I have ever heard it, and the atmosphere created is wonderful.

Definitely worth the money to any blues fan interested in something slightly left field. It's just unfortunate that we couldn't have been there ourselves.

I admit I've always been a bit biassed against this release. In Holland we were blessed with a compilation release called "So Many Roads" which had the original singles mixes of Double Touble & It Hurts Me Too, not the US-mixes that are on this "Looking Back" comp that omit Peter Green's trademark space-echo guitar sound and add an annoying tingling piano to It Hurts Me Too.

That being said, there are other treasures to be found here. Suspicion pt.1, even though pt.2 is the better track, & Jenny are welcome additions to my Mayall collection. The live recording of Stormy Monday is notable only for the line-up of the Bluesbreakers, which included both Clapton & Jack Bruce, but falls way below par in the recording department.
