I am no stranger to reviewing material by John Mayer and I know that sometimes I can come over as evangelical in my praise, but how else can you describe such an immense talent?
The SRV analogies are bound to resonate through other reviews, and I'm sure the talented Mr M would not baulk at the comparison. However, when a 'white man plays the blues', these analogies are all too easy to use and this takes away from the originality of John Mayer's skills as a songwriter. 'Stop This Train' is the most powerful song with the most simple delivery that I have heard, and is a song which, in its live format, I often find I'm too sensitive to listen to. I am fortunate to have seen him live on two occasions, but have only seen him perform this song ... Read More:

His best album to date (I've ordered the new live album - if it's anything like this & his perforamnce at Hyde Park it'll be incredible). Every song is superb - although "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" has to be the best song in the past year (& is also on the new live DVD/CD!). His music is hypnotic, classy, equisitely crafted. Enough! Buy!

I am new to John Mayer & have bought this DVD on the back of his performances on the 2 'Crossroads' DVDs.
It's a bit difficult to categorize Mayer as although he is undoubtedly a very accomplished guitarist he does not seem to highlight his own playing very much. Rather he seems to throw his real efforts into his singing which, as has already been noted, is very Stevie Ray Vaughan in quality, so that his guitar work seems to come second in his priorities. A shame as he really has some talent that works equally well when unleashed & raw,(his work on 'Who did you think I was' is really very impressive), or when stripped down to the bone in the quite beautiful & moving cover of Tom Pettys' 'Freefalling' with just mayer, an acoustic ... "Heavier Things" is John Mayer's second studio album which was released on September 9th of 2003. The style on this album is soft-rock, as this comes from a period before he transitioned into blues. The album consists of 10 tracks, including the Grammy award winning "Daughters". The title of the album appears to be an answer for those who criticized Mayer's music as being too light.
The album opens with "Clarity", a song for which the meaning is not all that clear, but in general it seems to be about Mayer's self-perception. The second track is "Bigger than My Body" which is about the frustration of not being able to accomplish in reality what one wants to do in their mind, and in particular relates to John Mayer's desire to write more meaningful ... I bought this having stumbled across a john mayer cover of kid a that i thought was brilliant. That and the reviews on here encouraged me however I the album i have just listened to bears no resemblance to what has been described.
If you like your music so bland you forget its playing then this is the album for you. He may have progressed with his later stuff but this is truly awful, save your money.

Wow! This guy is almost as good as Hendrix - and he's almost as good as Stevie Ray - and he does covers of some pretty good songs just as well as quite a few great players I've heard over the last 40 years - but....he doesn't bring anything new to the table. So what's the point?

His best album yet, this is just a joy to listen to -- from the bursting guitar tones of "Waiting on the World To Change" to the mellow "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room". If you like John Mayer, you won't be disappointed -- but keep your eyes peeled for the Special Edition of this album, which includes live tracks!

John Mayer is a name that if you asked anyone in the UK they'd reply "who?". That's got to change. I've been into Johns stuff for a few years now and I am really enjoying his new change of direction in Stevie Ray/Hendrix/Clapton influenced tunes. However I was pleased to see he is still keeping his acoustic roots and this album proves he can be both the jazzy electric artist and the soft acoustic ballad musician. Best tracks are "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room", "Good love is on the way", and "In Repair." I was a lil disapointed to see that "Stop This Train" - my favourite track on the Continuum album was not on the CD. That track is a brilliant, a moving song based on the journey of Mayer's life and how he has to leave his parents and go about his music - should of put it ... Read More:

Even if you're not particularly a John Mayer fan, the sound of his voice on this album is so honest and it's a great opportunity to really hear brilliant guitar playing, it also allows you to focus more on the songwriting than the other albums. The 4 songs that are on Room for Squares are still worth listening to on this album, especially Neon, and the other 4 songs and really good tracks. Comfortable is possibly my favourite John Mayer song, a song with the potential to be a real classic and this song alone makes buying this album worth it. There's also something about Victoria that I can't quite put my finger on, it's not the kind of track I would normally like but it pulls me in every time it comes on.
