I've been listening to the album for a couple of days now and it just gets better everytime. I love stripped down well recorded work like this and I knew I would not be disappointed knowing Lofgren (Hi NILS!) was doing this. Great musician and wonderful work all round. Neil's old Martin as well as the heirloom piano fit beautifully!
Love ya Nils, Love ya Neil and 'Long May You Boys Run'...

Following his success with the E Street Band it is easy to forget what an incredible solo talent Nils Lofgren is. Without doubt he is an amazing guitarist almost up there with Jimmy Page, David Gilmore, Keith Richards, Hank Marvin, Slash etc, as his work with the E Street Band shows; but it must be said he is also a fantastic singer and song writer also. Many songs on this 'best of album' with his band Grin illustrate this. The song 'Like Rain' is truly brilliant, as are many other songs on this album. And at £2.98 on Amazon the album is an absolute bargain.

The world is not short of a mystery or two and the fact that Nils Lofgren has never quite received the public acclaim his talent deserves is a case in point. Although recognised by the likes of Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen as an exceptional guitar player, his solo albums have rarely caused much of a stir elsewhere which is a huge shame. This compilation is a great introduction to not only a truly inventive and exciting guitar virtuoso but also a songwriter with a great sense of melody and rythmn.
The tracks span the period from his 1975 solo debut 'Nils Lofgren' through to the awesome 1997 'Acoustic Live'. If anything, the selection (and I think it was his own choice) tends to favour the softer side of his ... Read More:

At last, the second of Nils two albums for Backstreet/MCA Records has resurfaced on CD and not before time. 10 tracks which are as rocking as anything Nils offered before, but at last the lyrical bitterness and misoginy has disappeared to be replaced with a worldy wiser style.
Nils keeps up a tradition of covering heroes, and this time it's 'It's All Over Now' which stomps around well. The highlight however are mostly on the first half of the disc, 'Across The Tracks', 'Into The Night' and 'Daddy Dream' all classics (the latter is a great in car song), second half is a bit weaker, but ends on another classic closing Nils song (much like all his previous studio albums), the guitars wailing away in 'Deadline' are superb.

I have nothing to add to all the positive comments made by other reviewers about this album ~ it is something of a classic, albeit the electric guitar sounds rather shrill in places.
However, I bought the CD reissue first time round back in 1990 and, having waited many years for a newly digitally remastered edition to come out, I have to say I've been rather disappointed by this. To my ears anyway, it sounds virtually no different from the original CD issue (and I do set great store by good digital remastering).
So yes, this is a great album of its time and genre, but for this latest reissue I really don't think they've done much more than include in the sleeve notes the name of the bloke who did the original transfer from ... Read More:

Nils Lofgren is probably better known as a sideman to Bruce Springsteen, but he has been putting out solo albums since the early seventies. This one is from the later half of that decade and showcases some of his great guitar playing. A lot of his albums sound as if they have been produced not to scare anybody off. This album suffers a bit in parts from the same slighty safe arrangements but when he let's rip ,especially on the tracks "Share a Little" and the old yardbirds number "for your love", you can hear just how talented and raw edged he can be. Lofgrens style is based in a rock blues idiom but he combines this with his own unique use of plucked harmonics to create a truly memorable sound that is truly emotionally engaging.

There's so much stuff crammed into this album, each new listen reveals more and more breathtaking skill, whether it's guitar, dobro, pedal steel, keyboards of all description etc. etc. Though the album is short by comparison there's nothing in there that doesn't need to be. That's what makes it so powerful.
Favourite track - tough decision, they're all so fine: In Your Hands - Gorgeous love song (though I'd prefer to hear Nils sing every line of this song rather than Willie Nelson). Fat Girls Dance - an edgy funky groove, I won't explain the title - best to discover this for yourself I think. You won't be disappointed. Comfort Your Love Brings - delightful, makes you want to cry. Pay Your Woman - love the relaxed humour in ... Read More:
