Satyricon step up another notch with The Age of Nero. Developing on previous ideas the songs are incredibly well crafted - catchy at times (not aways a bad thing) but still dark and brooding - you can't help joining in with the chorus of Black Crow... or Die by My Hand. The riffs are worthy of Mr Iommi. Satyr is in startling form more than ably backed by Frost.
The intensity is unrelenting but never becomes one dimensional - there is plenty of subtlety and variation - the songwriting is that strong. The mix suits the mood and I thought my car was breaking up while playing The Sign of the Trident! Its true that this release will appeal to the mainstream metal lover than perhaps the likes of Burzums's earliest releases - but this is still a Beast of a black metal album.
I dont have a problem with decent production (I prefer it) and it suits the material here. Yes, 75% could be described as midtempo but with songs this good, especially the riffs, who cares!! Something about the sound reminds me of Metallica's Black album in its BIG drum and bass heavy vibe while still having a VERY thick, crunchy guitar tone. Satyr's vocals are as brutal as ever but you can still hear the lyrics clearly - one of the best vocalists in the Black Metal genre, and a really good guitar performance here, easily as good a rhythm player as James Hetfield ... Great 1996 album, with a real medieval feel! Absoluteley, totally heavy with a real focus on battles and the Apocalypse.
Production is strong and it's a full on assault of riffs & drums that batter into submission. Satyr's vocals are brutal, and yet always easy to understand. The album has some of THE best use of keyboards within Black Metal, on classics such as Mother North. And there's plenty of clear, audible bass guitar as well, to back up the insaneley heavy guitar work. Great drums, fast & heavy, sometimes really tribal from the legend that is Frost. I have been a Satyricon fan for about almost two years now, i got into them through a magazine giving the album 'Now Diabolical' a 5 star rating. I checked it out. . . Next thing i know im going to see them live and this album was swiftly in my hands, after buying the rest of there albums i listened to them all thoroughly. This album has to be my favourite album in the entire world. I would reccommend this album to any metal fan, whether or not you like black metal. I wouldnt even say this album was black metal, this album was the bridge between there new sound and there old sound. Elitists may think that they have betrayed the original sounds of black metal but i say if there making albums as good as this one then they can carry on for all I care. First of, this album is absolutely fantastic. Satyricon's last two albums, 'Rebel Extravaganza' and 'Volcano' have started to pull away from the traditional style of black metal, by creating a much more underground & industrial feel.In this album, they have done it perfectly. Frost's drums are still lightning fast, thunderously heavy and his use of the toms creates a superb rumbling effect.The riffs are mean, perfectly executed, and sometimes screechy, once again to create a superbly mechanical atmosphere.Most of the songs are played at supersonic speed, hence the title 'Supersonic Journey', but are brilliantly punctuated with slow, heavy parts.
