I kind of trusted on the reviews.Ok there are some great songs on it,the classic but also a lot of rubbish.A great number of songs (even some famous ones) sound like they were recorded with electronic music.

I received a promo copy of this at the weekend, I always look forward to hearing anything by neil young and this was no exception. Looking at the track listing its a mash of old buffalo springfield tunes and songs due to be release on his first solo record.
what you notice on first listen are the sparse arrangements and also how good Neils vocals sound, something that was lacking on Neils first album as it was lost in the mix. The best thing about the album are the moments between the songs, hearing Neil talk to the audience about taking drugs when working in a book store for two weeks, or towards the end when he asks for requests... how I'd love to see neil live and him taking requests!! What an absolutely magnificent release this is.From the soulful,upbeat strut of the opener "You Are The Best Thing" all the way to the hushed beauty of the title track which closes proceedings , Ray and his cohorts simply never put a foot wrong.It is ,i believe, a modern classic and a firm contender for Album Of The Year .
I came to this release with no knowledge of this guy's previous work , i'd heard his name and read about him but never got around to checking out his music. I cannot therefore tell you how this new work compares to previous releases , what i can tell you , without doubt , is that this is a CD i've been playing constantly for the past 3 or 4 weeks now and i've never got bored yet , in fact it just seems to get better every ... I can respect Robert Plant for his work with Led Zeppelin (nearly 40 years ago) and Alison Krauss is a major talent with the Union Station but this just does not work. The production by T Bone Burnett is good but the material is poor and boring. It neither one thing (Rock) nor another (Country/Bluegrass). Having read the reviews beforehand I borrowed this CD from my library prepared for a probable disappointment and it certainly lived up to that.

Agree with most of the reviews listed. If, like me, you went to Uni in the early 90's and have been a fan of that genre ever since you'll have almost grown up with Nick Bracegirdle's music and all the myriad offferings it inspired and spawned

I first heard the song Case of You in the film Practical Magic and thought how wonderful it was. I bought the film soundtrack (the whole music selection for the film was pretty good) and then i bought the album Blue to see what the rest of Jonis work was like.
I fell in love with the album so completely, that now i've moved to MP3 and sold 99% of my CD's i can't bear to part with this one. One of the others is Court & Spark. The music is so simple, the strings, drums, and her voice- the most wonderful voice i have ever heard, conveying such emotion that the music and words combined make the whole album an amazing rollercoaster of feelings and thoughts. Very ,very dissapointed with this CD, heard a bit on classic FM, rushed out to buy it, There have been 100s of albums with pipes and drums, and I though being The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards it would be superior. I regret having spent my money on this CD. look for budget CDs of pipe music, you will probably get the real thing, and much better.

This is one of those classic albums that everyone has to own, and it is a very special record.
There are so many brilliant songs on this album; personal favourites are Out On The Weekend, Heart Of Gold and Old Man, but every track is just as brilliant as the previous and next. The overall feel is just mellow and relaxed in terms of musical arrangement and vocal delivery, but the lyrics are intense in their depths of heartfelt emotion. It sounds too simple to be this good, with very modest and unassuming instruments and a harmonica, which adds to the feel of the heart of the American countryside/prairies. Spotted in a bookshop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. There wasn't a "2" was there? So I bought it. And it's hardly been off in the car since. I agree with other reviewers that not every song here is a gem, but the Lucas numbers do have something that stirs the sentiments. (You who said he wasn't a great songwriter, I present exhibit A - "Bring 'em Down" on Fairport 9). It's true though that it's the Denny tracks that really stir the soul. Her remarkable ability to interpret a song never disappoints on this disc.
With all the emotion in the vocals, and all the Telecaster Pyrotechnics of the genius Donahue, it's easy to ignore the superb foundation on which this edifice is built. British folk-rock music has provided some of the best rhythm sections in the world. Conway and ... Read More: >>More Details |
