Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.

I just felt completely compelled to write my first ever review for this special album. I bought this on a recommendation from Amazon, thank you Amazon. To say that this album is good is an understatement, it's exceptional! Ceu's voice conveys a superb depth of emotion; her soothing sultry tones tug you right into the soul of the music. This emotionality is also coupled with a fine vocal texture that you can reach out and touch, I find this aspect of her voice completely addictive.
This is an album that you simply must listen to if you have an interest in world music. The musical accompaniment is also excellent with its restraint. You can look to other reviews for comparisons with other musicians and comments on her musical influences, ... Read More:

Whilst watching the great film Life Aquatic (starring the brilliant Bill Murray) i was enthralled by the toons Seu Jorge was playing throughout the film, almost teasing me as i'm not a Bowie fan. But his interruptations are brilliant. Just him and an acoustic guitar, singing the songs that i recognise from yesteryear but in portuguese??
As i looked for a copy of the film's soundtrack, I struck upon this nugget of gold in the sand and immediately bought it. My daughter of only 9 years was dumb struck by Life on Mars, she now listens to it just as intently

I don't really understand why this album received such an under-whelming response, unlike their debut which was welcomed as the best thing since sliced bread. I love Donkey just as much as their first offering - it's more grown up, more honed and you can tell that as a band they've grown in confidence. I can't understand how one person said that 'the party is over' ...I'm listening to the album right now and it's just as lively and infectious as their first. It's such a shame that Donkey has been poorly rated by many rewiers in the press and online, because this album is just full of brilliance - how anyone cannot love 'Move', 'Left Behind', 'Air Painter' and, frankly, every track is totally beyond me! I'd suggest to any CSS fans who are wary of Donkey to ... Read More:

Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century.
To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right.
However, this album has a far larger significance, in the way that Sargeant Pepper did. It changed everything and set off ripples that are still reverberating today.

Always had a lot of time for early Sepultura - the thrash band of the 90s with the most political edge, and the best lyrics. 'Arise' is an undisputed masterpiece, which still lives on.
I bought this out of a sort of mosh-talgia - just hoping it would be in the same ball park. And it is...
This is all out blistering metal. Great, vicious lyrics. Max's vocals on full attack. Powerful riffs and drumming. It's also leaner and meaner than the Sep's 'Roots Bloody Roots' era. There are some interesting soundscapes as intros/outros but mostly it is hard-core music. Honed by experience, and responding to - strangely enough - how much the world is turning out to be just as those guys predicted a decade ago.
This music album was made in 1963 and it's totally timeless and as fresh in 2008 as when it was first made. I'm 43 and my dad is 70. My 8 year old son and all of us can't get enough of this. Getz's Chega De Saudade (One note samba) is totally the best jazz funk ever and all the other melodies are totally gold as well. You can buy this for yourslef or as a gift for a friend and it's totally priceless - worth a 100 times it's weight in gold. Enjoy!!!!

Exactly 10 years ago, the promising Yugoslav producer Suba released his debut album Sao Paulo Confessions, featuring several singers based in that Brazilian city including Bebel Gilberto, whose own debut was mostly produced by Suba and released soon after his tragic death in a fire in his apartment.
Subsequent attempts to recreate his elusive magic failed, but if it is misleading to mention that classic album in the context of this new one by the collective Sonantes - among whom are many of the same artists - there is a comparable sense of exploration, discovery and sheer pleasure in these performances.
The first surprise in that these are live recordings, not programmed beats. Each and every sound in a physical act, and interchange between musicians who ... Read More:

I love South American music and, in particular, Bossa Nova. This album has all the vibrancy and "smooziness" of these sounds with an added bite.A great CD to listen to on your own or with someone special.
