Typically, Shostakovich's cello music is attributed to Rostropovich, but I think Yo Yo Ma's interpretation of this - his edgy sound - is something to rival even him.
This is definitely a CD you'll want to play on loud - the orchestral clarity and recording quality is simply divine.

This is one piece of music is revolutionary. Instead of harmony or "tune" as it's content it uses rhythm. Primeval and dark it shows the picture of the tradition rite of spring Stravinsky was trying to show. This is ballet at it's best and at it's most raw. I cannot recommend this music enough. This forms a sort of bridge between the romantic era and the modern movement. Mix this music with works such as Picasso or even impressionists as Renoir washed down with buckets of absinthe and you will see what a revolution in sound and vision (plus resolve!) was going on. What are you doing you are reading on you should be buying this stop reading the review goes pretty boring from now on trust me! And for those not familiar with the ballet this was ... Read More:

This recording of Bernstein's music is well worth trying. Rated highly by Gramophone magazine, it is well worth a hear.
The Chichester Psalms alone are good value, but the other tracks of Bernstein's music played admirably by the Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra are all excellent.
I am glad this version is still available after all these years for it is a gem! Written as part of the War Trilogy ( 8th and 9th Symphonies being the others) it symbolises the struggle for survival in a besieged Leningrad. This version may not be to everyones taste for it is very loud, fast and brash. Leonard Bernstein draws every emotion possible from this music; he allows the music to flow and the emotions to surface. A wonderful performance all round. The recording is brilliant too, but make sure you don't upset the neighbours for it can get very loud particularly during the famous March, and the closing bars in the final movement. No lover of Shostakovich should be without this version.

There are a few minor complaints about this soundtrack. Why on earth didn't they dub the Sharks in the Quintet? Some of their notes are quite flat and the Jets also go wrong in this song. Why did no one notice?
Beautiful vocals from Marni Nixon and Jim Bryant (dubbing Natalie Wood & Richard Beymer) but the info on the CD isn't correct about Anita's vocals.
They are all credited as being sung by Betty Wand but that isn't the case. Wand dubs "A Boy Like That", Rita Moreno sings her own in "America" and the "Quintet" is Moreno until the counterpoint section when Marni Nixon takes over to sing the high notes (singing both Anita & Maria's vocals). It also fails to mention that it is Tucker Smith who sings the opening of "The Jet ... Read More:

Bernstein wrote himself into the annals of musical history with the score which he composed for West Side Story, a nineteen fifties version of Romeo and Juliet, and Stephen Sondheim did it justice with the terrific lyrics he wrote which made the music soar even higher. This a musical which has entered the popular consciousness with good reason. Who hasn't heard the beauty and poetry of "Maria", the expectant poignancy of "Tonight", or the eternally hopeful "Somewhere" and not been touched, especially when sung, as they are here, by Jim Bryant and Marnie Nixon? There is also the upbeat "America" and "I Feel Pretty" which are ensemble songs geared to showcase Jerome Robbins' choreography to perfection. This is a magnificent CD which should be ... Read More:
