Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century.
To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right. I discovered Dexter when I was still at school in the early sixties. In a short period of time he made his best albums. These are: Doin alright, Dexter Calling, Go, and another whose name escapes me. By a short head "Go" is the best of these. If you are a jazz fan and havnt got it your collection you should buy it immediately!

This music album was made in 1963 and it's totally timeless and as fresh in 2008 as when it was first made. I'm 43 and my dad is 70. My 8 year old son and all of us can't get enough of this. Getz's Chega De Saudade (One note samba) is totally the best jazz funk ever and all the other melodies are totally gold as well. You can buy this for yourslef or as a gift for a friend and it's totally priceless - worth a 100 times it's weight in gold. Enjoy!!!!

If you only ever own ONE album by Sonny Rollins, this has to be it. Having said that, why have you only one album by the great man???.... More like 10 stars!

At some point in 1956 Sonny Rollins developed from being a promising new voice on the tenor saxophone to one of the great jazz improvisers. From then until his temporary withdrawal from the jazz scene at the end of the decade he produced a series of fine recorded sessions, including a classic album aptly titled ‘Saxophone Colossus’. Whether or not this Village Vanguard recording is one of the best of these, it is valuable for capturing Rollins in good form in a live setting accompanied only by bass and drums. Jazz Samba is the first, but now possibly least famous, of the works by the famous samba populist and saxophonist, Stan Getz. Here he collaborates with the guitarist Charlie Byrd to produce, in my opinion, his finest Samba album. Unlike the later Getz/Gilberto, Getz/Byrd has no vocal content and relies on swinging samba melodies and dexterous interplay between these masters of jazz sax and guitar. In tempo, it ranges from the boisterous E Luxo So, through the never-bettered Desafinado to the melancholic and beautiful Samba Triste. Getz's samba does not engage the listener like other jazz forms. Its Brazilian rhythms fade naturally into the background, making it ideal for sophisticated party music. It's hard to think of anyone who has a tone quite like Stan Getz: breathy yet rich, cool yet passionate, he was unique. Famous for his wonderful bossa nova recordings, he also made some great music with other jazz masters. This album with the Oscar Peterson Trio is particularly fine. Getz's warm, lyrical tone caresses a collection of great tunes with admirable collaboration from one of the finest trios of all time. The lack of a drummer allows an intimate, relaxed feeling to the proceedings, and the results are seriously enjoyable. Highlights include a swinging "Pennies From Heaven" and beautiful ballad work on "Detour Ahead" and "I'm Glad There Is You". All Getz fans and jazz lovers should investigate this CD without delay.

This is small group jazz at its very best. After casting off the restraints of the bossa nova years and dabblings in popish fusion stuff, hear Getz doing what he does best - playing gorgeous tenor with some great sidemen. Stan really stretches out here - including a fast 'What Is This Thing Called Love'- but even though it was one of his last recordings, not much of the butter seems to have run out of his tone. He sounds irristable on the opening 'El Cahon' and all throughout the CD he weaves long flowing lines through and around the chords - a masterly show of phrasing.
