David Gilmour's second solo effort from 1984 see's him deliberately getting away from the distinctive, timeless sound of Pink Floyd. In doing so, About Face today sounds very much 'of its time' - drenched in mid-eighties synth, drums and an awful 'Phil Collins-esque' horn section.
Thats not so say there aren't redeeming factors here. Gilmour's solo's - when allowed to break through the horrid 80's gloss - are great, and there are some decent songs (Murder, Out Of The Blue, Near The End) but there is a lot that is instantly forgettable. If you want Gilmour on top solo form get his 2006 'On An Island' album, or check out his amazing live DVD's. >>More Details |

I bought this on vinyl (twice! I wore one out) and on CD (albeit in original format without the 2 extra tracks). This album ranks with the Beano one as a 60s classic: Mick Taylor is brilliant (and still only 20 years old - downhill from now on....) and the whole thing is a masterpiece of ensemble playing. I find myself coming back to it regularly, nearly 40 years on.
One friend described it as a perfect record for making love - rumbustious start, mood switches through the middle, and a drawn-out langourous ending. Never tried it, but I can see where he was coming from. >>More Details |

Were I to be marooned on a desert island, this would be one of the ten albums that would help me while away the days. It has vibrancy, verve, panache. Mick Abrahams guitar work is like watching fireworks goes off. The reeds are as a cool as a white christmas and the rythm section just pulses. Yep, when I play this record the good times and feelings just roll.

This is a superb collection from the late Texas Genius. Buy this album if you like guitar brilliance, when you hear it you seriously wonder if there was anyone better.

The new album by the best guitarist in the world bar none - you really need to know no more ! I heard Sonny Landreth by accident on "Last FM" and was so captivated that i rushed out and bought all of his albums that i could lay my hands on. Unfortunately because of the English mentality that was "none" at the time and I had to order from the USA. If you're coming to Sonny Landreth now you are luckier as these fine albums are now available in this country easily through Amazon. This is Mr Landreth's latest offering and a fine piece of work it is too. Most albums featuring "guest stars" can get a little tiresome as it can turn into a "spot who's playing what" exercise but this is a fabulous album where everything just blends together perfectly. Having been there at the start, and buying every album up to Physical Graffiti, for some reason I stopped there. Doh!
This one is real down home basic Zeppelin through and through. If you listen to the progression of their work from the first album (originally raved over but much over-rated in my view) through II (for me the first real uniquely Zeppelin album), through III, IV, HOTH and Phys Graf you can clearly see the development, ever more Zeppelin and confident. This one seems to be the culmination of that progression - no need to pose or strut or stray into experimental territory - they just know what it is they do well, and they just get on and do it.
