Buddy Guy celebrates his new recording contract with Silvertone by setting out his stall from the very first track - the title which features some exceptionally fiery guitar playing and there's some lovely fluid guitar playing all over this album. As well as this facet Buddy Guy shows his softer - more "bluesier" side on "Five Long Years" and "Black Night" - the two longest tracks on the album. The album features a stellar cast of guitar greats - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler but Buddy Guy's guitar burns the brightest of them all. There's an odd cover here of "Mustang Sally" which is taken a tad slower than normal but works well. The last track - "Remembering Stevie" is in homage to the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan and is a beautiful ... Read More:

Freddie King is very rocky with a Texas style bluesman and this album really displays it. You can clearly see where guitarists such as Eric Clapton and Johnny Winter got some of their style from. This album is a great representation of his work with some great songs. For me as a young guitarist I would rate this as first class to any of the other blues influences and modern bands I have heard. Its an awesome album definately worth getting.

The replacement of Mick Abrahams with Martin Barre enabled Tull to play a much wider range of music, and they didn't waste any time in doing so. The only blues track is the opener 'A new day yesterday', a nice link with "This was". Lighter acoustic numbers 'Jeffrey goes to Leicester square' and 'Fat man' mix with the harder rock of 'Nothing is easy' and 'For a thousand mothers'. 'Reasons for waiting' is the first example of orchestral backing in the Tull catalogue, while the instrumental 'Bouree' is the only track not written by IA, though the jazzed up version here is not exactly what mr Bach had in mind, some nice flutework and excellent bass have made this a favourite number (both studio and live). 'Back to the family' is a softer rock number, while 'Look into ... Read More:

There will be some younger rips who have never heard of this band of 5 young men from Salisbury in Wiltshire in England, but what a great deal of amazing music they have missed. Along with their side-kicks from nearby Andover in The Troggs, together, these two 'West Country Bands' virtually dominated the UK Top 40 from 1966 and into the early 1970's.
Agreed, I bought this for my wife who is a massive fan still to this day, and although the tracks are the same we were disappointed in getting a black and white picture of the band on the CD cover rather then this lush, colour jobby. But hey, it's about the music, isn't it, and here on one fabulous CD you have all their major Hits, of which the vast majority of this CD is bursting as they had so many.
They played Bournemouth's ... Read More:

Not only are the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir a brilliant live band, their new album is a swirl of blues rhythms,mashed-up with country and punk. The vocals are a bit Tom Waits-y, and that's meant in a good way. From crawling, clanking Son House numbers to whirling dervish roots workouts, if you like your music raw and exciting these are the boys for you.

After hearing/reading/listening to this album absolutely spellbound, I was left with tears in my eyes as the final song, "There's a bright side somewhere", was playing. The brilliant musicianship, the simplicity of the music, and the expression of hope in this whole album, touched me so deeply. And that's what I want from Ry Cooder: to hear him and enjoy the sound, but also to identify with him, and to be taken on his journey with him through each and every one of his recordings. I can always trust him to speak directly to me through his music. "My Name Is Buddy" is no exception. Thanks Ry Cooder for being true on your journey, and giving me a legacy of music that never dissappoints as long as my ears, mind and heart are open to receive.

Apparently created in less than 3 weeks, from start to finish, this is a great album and possibly Skynyrd's best. They worked 16-hour days during that time, their first break in touring for months. However, before it was released, guitarist Ed King had left (or been pushed - depending on who you listen to!), unwilling to put up with the workload any more. However, the superb Artimus Pyle is on drums, making this the strongest lineup to date. I'm amazed how the arrangement on songs like "I'm a Country Boy" and "On the Hunt" are so good - the three guitars all intertwining in that superb Skynyrd fashion - riffs, solos, slide - it's all there. There's really not a bad track on this album - even the back-to-roots "Made in the Shade" is a great foot-tapper - I defy you to listen to that song without a smile ... Read More:
