I used to own this album 8 years ago but I lost it. I just bought it again and I still love this album. There are so many kinds of music that I out grew after I left my 20's. But this album is so original and full of emotion and creativity. It still rocks and there is nothing like it.

Some of the songs in this massive collection make you shake your head with wonder - surely this one can't have been released as a record for people to buy in a record shop? Imagine the conversation from 1929 - "Excuse me, have you got I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground, by Bascom Lamar Lunsford?" "Why certainly young sir, it's right here, that'll be 30 cents!" But apparently ALL of these songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, gospel shouts, shape-note choirs, blues, string bands, cajuns and hot sermonising were indeed issued on 78s, and the public did buy them. This is a great album, my personal Santana favourite. However, there is nothing to suggest on the box that this album has actually been remastered, or that anything has been done to 'buff up' the sound, despite another reviewer's praise for the improved sound quality on this release. Maybe this is just a reissue rather than a remaster. If it were the latter surely that fact would be advertised on the packaging.

This is a great album, my personal Santana favourite. Simply one of the greatest rock albums ever released. Or, if you like, three of the greatest live tracks ever released with 3 studio tracks added on but not 'an album'. Who cares? The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't contain a fourth live track instead of the three short studio tracks. Now with CD allowing much more space it is a disgrace that Polydor haven't rectified this. With one or even two extra live tracks it would have the makings of what discophiles like to think of as an 'album' and people compiling discographies might stop moaning about it being a(n)(arbitrary) hodge podge and completely forgetting to rate it primarily on the quality of the music rather than as some sort of meaningful, tidy or satisfying arrangement of tracks. ... Raw, tough, fiery and polished. This album has to be one of the best around for all of these things. If you're into Led Zepp, Hendrix, 70s blues rock etc then this has to be in your collection. Not that the Black Keys sound the same as any of these people/groups mentioned, they've got a sound and a style of their own. But it's a good bet that if you feel music in your bones from that bunch then this duo with their stripped down sound and ferocious tunes will get to you in the same way.

I was incredibly excited about purchasing this piece of work.I've seen EC touring and listened to most of his albums, particularly the blues oriented ones (some of the solo albums can be bland e.g. August- not a description that can be used for the live sound created both here and on other discs such both the Crossroads DVDs).
Disapointed at all? No - it feels as if EC has taken the essence of the original RJ material and delivered it in a manner that makes the most of current recording techniques, whilst delivering the spirit of Blues as it is meant to be. I've not heard a better sounding blues album! The complementary guitar work of EC & Doyle Bramhall II is exemplary throughout - and especially the acoustic section.
