God this makes you feel good-its not the deep soul of Etta James but radio friendly,white sounding and you could fall inside it.
First made in the late 80s by K TEL its Etta James for the masses-famous Gospel songs done with a socking great Johnny Rivers/Trini Lopez backing. While it was Ray Charles first who secularized black music-leading to dozens of hymns being remade in the 60s-Etta James was only minimally involved and wasn't a writer anyway but it took 3 to come up with Something's got a hold on me and of the songs here theres one called In My Father's House-how did this one escape being turned into something like "in Daddy Gs house theres a rockin'band"-imagine what Gary US Bonds could have done with that-that actual melody ... I like this album, despite the fact that a few of the tracks have a slight 'country' feel to them. The title track, well, Etta sings it like it's true, and having read her autobiography I'm sure it is. 'Love It Or Leave It Alone' is a funky, mid-tempo number that I love, while her version of 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' is as good as any I've heard, including Otis Redding's. Etta's voice is in fine form, much of the album has at least a good degree of her trademark passion (unlike a number of her recent albums), and while this isn't my favourite Ftta James CD, it IS one of the better ones, that's for sure, despite the fact that Etta herself has said she doesn't like it, apparently. I do.
