This is a great starting place for any jazz collection. Blue Note is probably the top jazz label and here you have a wide selection of their artists on 2 discs. This is the perfect way to see what type of jazz you like and what artists you like before you go out to buy some albums by them. It's also great for when you can't be bothered to choose one album, but are in the mood for some jazz.

I bought this album because it was cheap, and I am interested in jazz. Not that I am a jazz fanatic. I am usually an electronic buff, but want to explore other genres as well to not get the tunnel vision one tends to get with just listening to one genre. So I dare sometimes dive deep into jazz. Not that I have gotten the chance much, so this CD would be a first attempt.
Well, to be frank, I was mildly disappointed. This is not jazz, I know that much. This is soul of various origins. Granted some tracks are really old, and some are very good. Having received this box for Christmas, I was a little uncertain of the music it contained, particilarly with the number of repeated tracks. However, this being my 10th Miles Davis box set with none of the others disappointing, I should have had no reservations! The music contained on these performances is exciting, vibrant and fresh. Whilst I know that some of it has been available for a long time, it amaizes me that it took so long for these recording to surface. This sets links so well between the Jack Johnson and On The Corner sets. The fact that this set was recorded only 5 years after the stunning Plugged Nickel box demonstrates the most phenomenal progression. This is basically a 60 min jam. There isnt too much too it, but there is some really great playing, not least by McLaughlin. It's a worthy addition to any Miles collection....rock on fellas!!!

Another reviewer in here said "this album is quite simply terrible buy a will to death by john frusciante", which may very well be the lamest comparison I've ever heard! Pastorius and Frusciante have absolutely nothing in common except of a few letters in their names! Everyone who have ever been blessed by hearing Jaco now that he is/was THE best bass player in the world..well close followed by Victor Wooten, but still Jaco's the best! And this album really reflects his absolute control of the instrument and his feeling for every single note he plays! Buy it, you won't regret...

I have had this album since vinyl and it is probably in my favorite ten or so. From memory Tommy Bolin is on guitar and Jan Hammer on keyboards. As a previous reviewer mentioned it should be listened to as a whole. There are however some searing exchanges that stand out between Hammer and Bolin with the opening track leaving me transfixed. The thing I like particularly about it is that even when dueling, the keyboard and guitar allow each other space and don't simply try to play faster. They slide gloriously from phrase to phrase and Bolin's chord work is stunning. The mood changes are lovely and Cobham's drumming both leads and cements the entire work together. I suspect they enjoyed making this album hugely and would pay again for the out takes....

I then looked for it for about five years before stumbling upon it when I was living in Japan (at that time it was out of print everywhere else). All I can say is, it's beautiful! There's nothing else like it in the world. My personal favourites are the daffodil and the eagle, which has a very interesting climactic rhythmical structure, and get down and sruti, which I would say is more like a blues than a reggae - the highlight is Shankar's crazy, funky solo. get it, listen to it, and expand your mind and soul!
