A tremendous collection of each British Army Regiment's own 'signature' tune.

From well known marches like 'The Radetsky' to lesser known tunes like 'The days we went a gipsying', they are all beautifully played by the Band of the Coldstream Guards in quicktime pace, ( 116 beats per minute ).

Together with Vol. 2, these great recordings will turn your living room into Horse Guards Parade !

I leave on the assumption that you are familiar with the work and looking at different recordings. I started out with this famous recording featuring Dawn Upshaw which actually made the Top 10 in Britain, if I remember correctly. I have come to prefer another recording, by Joanna Koslowska with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra (though I never experienced the Upshaw version as flawed). I had become addicted to this music and had gone looking for alternative recordings; at times I owned five different ones. Now, this one and the Koslowska version are left.

The main difference, I think, is in the rendering of the sorrowful songs. Upshaw presents the vocal parts as symphonic pieces, like arias. The Polish singer gives them a distinct ... Read More:

I am not musically literate, i.e i dont know a crotchet from a quaver but i know what i like, is it an exagerration to say that if we had to show one example of the greatness and potential of human culture, to say some visiting aliens, would it be reasonable to play them these recordings?

Karajan recorded the four Brahms symphonies three times for DG and for me the earliest (1963 or thereabouts) is the best by a fair margin, and although not perfect, the sound quality is better - more natural and open. There's more life, spontanaity and drama in the 60s cycle, which by comparison his later efforts sound somewhat mannered. Like much of Karajan's output, his earlier years with the BPO give better performances. Later repeats (say 1970 onwards) are generally marred by a BPO which had been over-refined by Karajan's influence in the way it sounded - plush and too 'well-rounded' - a good anology would be a typical German big car; smooth and comfortable but ultimately bland and boring. The approach might suit Richard Strauss but not Brahms ... Read More:

I am constantly playing this in the car because I love it so much, other recordings are good but this is just a little bit different, in the Allegro movement of Spring if you listen to the bit before the whole violin and viola section thunders it's way to the tumultuous tweeting solo, you will notice that Nigel bow's 4 times in quick succession instead of the usual 2, the cadenza allows for this and Nigel exploited it with typical panache. It's good to see him back in the limelight once more with his new recording, now lives in Krakow with his Polish missus.

Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols' is a definitive work which has spawned more ghastly recordings than almost any other in the choral cannon! This, however, is far from being one of those.

In 1966, the ultimate recording of the work, by St John's College Choir with Maria Robles on harp was released. Every recording since then has been a bitter disappointment - until this one.

Although the vocal attack perhaps lacks the edge that St John's had (which wouldn't be hard since the continental voice training which George Guest used for half the boys gave a unique sound) this succeeds where so many before have failed. The tuning is excellent and the diction spot on. The very slight 'springing' of the rhythm in the processional makes you realise ... Read More:

The original `Pure' album was released in 2003, and despite there now being a confusing number of variations of it (special edition, import, bonus tracks & bonus discs) there are basically two editions - this original single disc album, and a 2CD Special Edition which is the original album plus a bonus disc.

The songs are a mixture of classical, popular and traditional, with some highly original and unexpected choices such as `River of Dreams' which is a transcription of Vivaldi's lovely violin solo `largo' from `The Four Seasons', and a powerful recording of `Benedictus' from the Karl Jenkins' album `The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace'.

The New Zealand traditionals, predictably chosen because of Hayley's origin from that country, ... Read More:

Brilliant performance, gripping, double-dotted strings give a real edge to Rex Tremendae, while Kirkby and Watkinson's pure sound blend wonderfully with the fruity Knabenchor sound of Westminster Cathedral. The 'authentic' instruments really make this recording stand out, from the military-sounding timpani to the warm tones of the brass chords in the Tuba mirum. The inclusion of the Amen chorus is a controversial choice, and will probably offend some, but to my ears this sounds entirely in place - simultaneously plaintive and infused with Todesangst. This is a brilliant attempt to peel back the Süssmayr's modifications and get back to Mozart's original intentions. Dropping in Mozart's Amen chorus is a daring and explicit break with previous interpretations of this work. ... Read More:

This recording is consistently fresh, not a moment sounds stale or anything other than a shining example of sound musicianship. All of the vocalists are on top form and the orchestra accompanies beautifully without exception. I really can't think of anything wrong with it.
This CD was given to me as a gift, a 'little piece of Oxford.' I would never have bought it myself because I enjoy the sound of women singing the soprano parts. I have been forced to re-evaluate... Listen to 'His Yoke is Easy' and then try arguing that boy sopranos don't sound even better than female sopranos in this piece!! The small choir and orchestra is perfect, it really brings out the Baroque nature of the piece, but somehow manages to reach and touch me in a very modern sense.
The tempi ... Read More:
