Yet another superb collection from the Sessions people. Smooth grooves from Tone Loc, Def Jef and Spoonie Gee mixed with harder numbers from KRS-One, Ultramagnetics etc. An excellent compilation of premier cuts from the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Worth buying alone for JVC Force's Strong Island. When the stores are full of tired Old School compilations do yourself a favour and buy this instead. the boys are evolving and this is where it all seems to begin as the basslines start to get bolstered with guitar riffs and the much more prominant use of sampled strings to form the melodies starts to kick in. the raps are still there and at the high end of quality, the humour is starting to kick back in again witness Dr.Greenthumb (awesome song) and the boys sound vital again not paranoid not overwhelmed but enjoying the game. probably helps that this album was recorded with the fresh return of sen dog and b-real had got the last of his issues out of the way on the psycho realm project (well worth checking out too) and they could all return to their day jobs.

I'd never heard of Just Jack until "Starz In Their Eyes" (which, on the album, is a slightly longer version than the single with a slow break in the middle) but I'm pleasantly surprised. The rest of the album isn't quite as upbeat as "Starz..." but it is worth getting if you were ever a fan of Galliano and their brand of tuneful acid jazz (":4" is probably the album closest in style to this one). "Overtones" is a bit more modern, though (plenty of cockney rapping and some surprisingly complex tunes) but that's no bad thing. This guy's got attitude but this album is very listenable and not at all abrasive.

The legend of Tupac Shakur has only grown since his death, not least due to how suprisingly prolific he is from beyond the grave. With the West Coast practically ruling gangsta rap in the early nineties, it says something for Biggie Smalls a.k.a. Notorious BIG that he almost single-handedly shifted attention back onto the East Coast in 1994, and that with only two proper albums his legacy measures up to Tupac's. Indeed, many still consider him to be the greatest to ever pick up the mic, and this album is the majority of the reasoning behind that stance.

Since "Premiers Symptomes" means "first symptoms," it's appropriate that it's the name of Air's collection of early singles. This French duo created a warm sweep of electronica that sounded like a complete , which is only marred by two funky, rather awkward songs pasted on to the end.
"Modular Mix" kicks it off -- a dreamy song that sounds like the soundtrack for an underwater movie. "Casanova 70" and the languid "Les Professionals" add a lounge-y sound. And "J'Ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" and "Le Soleil Est Près de Moi" are sweet and slow , almost like a pair of trip-hop lullabies. Here we have the definative collection of the best (white) hip-hop band ever and probably in the top 5 of any race along with Wu, Public Enemy and Run DMC.
This is what I would say is probably the coolest best-of I've heard in years, that is chock full of songs that you would instanly recognise and some you probably didn't know were by the Beasties'! It starts off with 'So What You Want' a rocky rap tune that is one of my favourate songs by this group that instantly shows them as innovators of the game with no fear as they tear through any beat. ...........but somehow I got to hear this album in the early/mid nighties - possibly through Guru's association with the jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan who features on this disc. Jazzmatazz vol.1 and the subsequent Jazzmatazz albums seem to elevate themselves out of the regular bitching of rap and hip hop through some excellent songs with great song structure, melodies and variety. Whether this is due to Guru, who it has to be said is really 'into himself' as demonstrated by a number of self penned narratives on how good he is on both this and other jazzmatazz albums or whether it is some of the exceelent contributors that appear throughout the record. Either way he desreves credit for either creating or facilitating a number of tremendous records.
