I thought I had written a review of this, but seems not. This is a beautiful progression from the first album. The songs are stronger, Lanegan gets more to do and Campbell seems confident enough to let him put much more of his personality in to it. Interesting progression in the album art; they've moved from the sleazy motel to a house in the country and Isobel's letting her hair down in plaid shirt and jeans. If you like Ballad of the Broken Seas, you'll like this even more and the new , EP Keep me in mind Sweetheart, moves the music and the story onwards.

I bought after this after the boatman and was initially a bit disappointed. New to nick cave I was desperate to hear my second album. Now rarely a day goes by where I can't resist playing it. Taken as a whole it is a very strong album, covering lots of styles and different topics. Some songs I do skip but the majority are just plain brilliant. Quite unlike anything else around. Nick Cave has an ability to write profound, intense and humerous lyrics that leave you smiling and thinking 'what a genius.' Strong religious connatations, comments on modern society and biblical stories retold. This is probably the best compilation album of Stevie's work and that's great but I urge you all to use this as a taster of his work, there is lots of it and if you buy anything before 1980 you will love it if you like this. Unfortunately he's done nothing of real note after the 1970's and that was where his key work was done. The trilogy of talking book, innvervisions and Songs in the key of life are treasures to be explored in their won right and you should all do so, personally although songs in the key of life is seen as his masterpiece it was a double album brain dump of everything he was working on and contains material that is weaker than the shorter talking book and innvervisions, with Innvervisions representing his finest (non compilation) album in ... I had heard some very complimentary reviews of this album, and as I love his music anyway, I couldn't wait to hear this latest offering for myself.
I think that some of the negative, or rather, less than good, ratings received on here are from people who want to hear Paul Weller delivering Paul Weller as we know it. This album will probably disppoint such people as it's a trip into other musical genres, such as Elvis Costello type heartfelt ballads; Invisible sounds EXACTLY like a Costello number, and folky-type sounds such as on Light Numbers. I bought this during the £3 offer from Amazon over Christmas, not seeing anything else I particularly wanted. I wasn't bothered about it, but have ended up absolutely loving it and converting both myself and my husband into big Amy MacDonald fans overnight!

I recently borrowed this album from a friend and within 5 minutes of listening i was utterly amazed. The music that this man creates moves you passionately. Within the next two weeks i had bought the album and bought another 2 cd's called "live at sine" which is from Jeff's earlier days. The music moved me in a way that i found it hard to listen to "grace" in the prescence of other people and had to listen to it solitary. For anyone who wishes to be moved by music this album is perfect.
