Making a second album was never going to be an easy thing for Arcade Fire, Funeral was possibly the worst type of debut album a band could make being that it was absolutely amazing and possibly the best album of the last 20 years. The logical thing to do after making an album that good is to realise it's impossible for you to top it and just not even try...luckily this is not what Arcade Fire do. The band fully realise they can't ever make another Funeral, so instead of trying to make Funeral Part 2, the band instead decide to head in a different musical direction. The thing you've got to realise is that this album is not and will never be Funeral, you can't even really compare the two they're leagues apart and both are completely brilliant ... Read More:

I originally posted the review below on the 2001 release which has been deleted for many a year.
It's nice to see this classic album given a deserved re-release, especially as it's (yet another) two-disc deluxe edition. The album has had a welcome remaster and included unreleased demos and live tracks.
OK, this is the original lineups last album. Released in September 1979, it shows that the band were heading in a new direction. Though behind the scenes, the band were slowly falling apart, their recorded offerings were still of the highest quality.
Side one is shared between Shelley and Diggle. Pete offers us the catchy "Paradise", the gorgeous "You Say You Don't Love Me" and it's b-side "Raison D'etre". ... Read More:

This is most definately an album that deserves at least 3 listenings to from everyone who says they like listening to music because it is very very very good.
The opening title track 'Bombtrack' is a perfect track to listen to to understand this album because it is almost like a round up of everything to come in the rest of the album. Driving guitar riffs and licks (yes licks) from Morello and angsty hip lyrics from Zach. In fact the only thing it really doesn't convey about the album is quite the intricate brilliance of Morello's soloing ability and guitar playing. What made Rage popular back then still holds so much appeal today to real music fans because they are a truly unique experiance and their debut album can easily be counted ... Read More:

I decided to buy this after seeing a low price tag, hearing a couple of singles and a bit of hype. Fortunately, the album was a good buy, and is a different listen to the stuff I usually buy. I'm quite open to music, and this is certainly different. A strong usage of techno synths, and vocal effects, but the sound they create is unique. I can understand people not liking them, but give them a go; refresh and modernise your CD collection!

The best most energetic, album I've heard for years.
been playing this album time after time and after over 100 plus listens it gets better and better.
The '59 Sounds rocks. Don't miss out on this one.
Really looking forward to seeing them live in Manchester in 3 weeks.
Five stars really isn't enough.
As Jon Landau said, 'I've heard the future of Rock and Roll....'

After being thoroughly disappointed with Rilo Kiley's last album I approached this with some trepidation. Thankfully this turned out to be a good listen - not immediate but a definite 'grower' after a few plays. Songs such as 'Pretty Bird' and 'Godspeed' are gorgeous, for example. I've even grown to quite like Elvis Costello's contribution to 'Carpetbaggers' which at first struck me as rough and too raw. Now I think I think it fits the song. All in all, worth a listen. Jenny Lewis is a talented writer and singer - one wonders why she needs Rilo any more as this is far superior. I do agree with the reviewer about the cover - it is shockingly bad considering the quality of the contents. No stars for that!

Ever had that experience when, while everyone else is rolling about laughing, you're standing there thinking: "that's just not funny". I read the hype, I get the CD, I listened, I listened again - then I went back to the real deal - all that late 60s and early 70s stuff. After that I stopped caring that I just don't get this record.
