I was wanting a CD version to replace my old tape version of White Christmas. This CD was cheaper and contains all the old favorites on my tape, plus several more. Bing is such a great singer! Best value for money.

I haven't bought the second or third CD from Tord - the first is nice, but too gentle and smooth for me on the whole. Where Jarrett digs and delves and constantly challenges himself to the point where he achieves state-of-grace, Tord sounds timid. It is haunting but not completely rewarding for me.
All the same, I have tickets for the concert next Friday 5th December at St Martins church (just off Trafalgar Square). Seems like the ideal venue for his minimal approach. This might persuade me to make another purchase - who knows. >>More Details |

This album is proof that the criticisms of Wayne Shorter being just another Rollins-Coltrane imitator were indeed fatuous. Shorter, who has always incorporated a stronger element of the blues to his playing than Coltrane did in the mid-sixties, mixes this with some masterful composition and improvisation. Couple this with some astounding support from the polyrhythmic Elvin Jones, a (sometimes over) brassy and exuberant Freddie Hubbard, with the mercurial Herbie Hancock and journeyman Ron Carter. The compositions themselves are wondrous, opening with "Witch Hunt", an interesting piece with a separate intro that moves straight into the main theme. I've never reviewed an album on Amazon before, but I have to just stop by and echo the comments of almost everyone else here.... A superb album, where melodic piano notes intertwine beautifully with Indian tabla and Spanish guitar, underpinned by a drum- and- bassy line.
Yes Sawhney does put across a strong political message throughout the album, but I feel the soundbites really add something to an already excellent piece of work. Tracks 1,2,5,& 7 are particular favourites of mine. >>More Details |

This set is fantastic, in that it covers Nina`s career from her very first recordings for Bethlehem (including of course My Baby Just Cares For Me)right up to the title track from her last album Single Woman(which has just been reissued with some great bonus tracks). Along the way there are numerous brilliant previously unreleased tracks and live recordings, including several from the terrific A Very Rare Evening set. Needless to say with Nina the performances are committed, sometimes quirky and often electrifying. And the dvd performances are long overdue for issue. What`s not so good is the omission of anything from Nina`s Back, Live at Ronnie Scott`s or Fodder In Her Wings, and it would have been wonderful to have the complete Very Rare Evening; tapes of it exist-the ... So who would have thought of teaming Bring Crosby, Satchmo Armstrong AND Frank Sinatra together with the music of Cole Porter to dream up a "society story" around the well-heeled Newport Rhode Island clan? Well it works as a stylish collection of romantic tunes with laid back performances by Crosby. Sinatra brings a hard edge to the dialogue and albeit a slightly unusual pairing with Celeste Holm as magazine reporter/photographer duo. Grace Kelly is beautiful but almost too clean cut to be real and frankly over acts throughout. Louis Armstrong and his band adds spice in a few places and the "Well Did You Evah" duo by Crosby & Sinatra is a classic.
