Perhaps the jazz conservatives (e.g. Stanley Crouch) would burn me at the stake for the title of this review and yes, the soul-stirring Kind of Blue is certainly the best modal record I've heard, but I much prefer this, since Coltrane and Adderley really leap out and play from the get-go.
Dr. Jackle is absolutely manic to play, a Jackie McLean tune that this quintet seem to delight in playing rather fast. It's excellent hard-bop, and Miles plays an excellent solo which sticks to the middle register, a range which trumpeteers do not explore enough, though this can be only down to the influence of intervallic trumpeters like Dizzy. Listen out for the early duel between Adderley, and Coltrane. Listening to 'Two Bass Hit', it is an interesting ... Read More:

This is one of those CD's that grows on you with each listen. I first listened to it over 10 years ago and I can safely say that I am only now appreciating its brilliance. The lyrics are not published on the inlay card, and that is maybe a good thing because it forces you to pay attention. The later songs seem to question God: "From Rags to Riches" & "Easter Parade". Mere existence is a theme on "Stay" & "Heat wave".

"From Rags to Riches" is juxtaposed with images of P.Buchan growing up and leaving home set against an image of the Jewish exodus from Egypt to the promised land with references to `a coat of many colours' yet at the same time it is relevant to modern life with its struggles of poverty and promises of riches. In some ways ... Read More:

What a class act this man is! a fantastic kalaidascopic cornacopia of a rollercoaster into the smoky realms of Jazztopia! with a cherry on top! I recommend this cd to everyone who has yet to worship at altar of Acker in the church of Bilk!. What people also don't realise is that Acker is also a greco roman wrestling champion at several different weights but gave up to concentrate solely on music, for that we should be gratefull my friends! also a special mention to Chris Barton who plays baritone on several of these tracks and is a very underated musician in his own right. If you like Acker I recommend you try Chris Barton's album " When Sally met Chris, the Stable sessions ". A modern jazz classic!

This is Santana of emense, cross sectional, swathe across a timeless barrier of a music making Warrior.Disc One are all vocal tracks that some have been re-mixed and Disc Two are all intrumental tracks, which some have been remixed. Santana here have offered up some of their best known to least known tracks, which makes a refreshing change to *Best of, or greatest hits*
Seaming together a timless fabulous sound which takes into the world of the love of real music.
True fans, may argue that this album was a lost oppertunity to go further and acually re-mix all the tracks into an amazing, glourious testamant of change. But what i believe fans are searching for, is more of that haunting, spine-tingling, beautiful little guitar rifts, worked into so many of Carlos tracks ... Read More:

To save space and time I'll say that Juan Mobili's review of this album is spot on, but I have few things to add. Firstly Lila's live show is excellent. The next time she and her fine band la Misteriosa are on tour do whatever you can to go to see them. The band arrangements are very strong too, beautifully mixing elements of many styles and traditions in a way that perfectly complements Lila's singing. My personal favourite on this disc is Ojo de Culebra, her duet with La Mari of the Spanish nuevo flamenco band Chambao.

Unlike the other reviewers I would say that if you want to have a collection that shows you can tell the difference between inspiration and the run-of-the mill then you should have this original release (at least on a major label) and if you must have the rest for purposes of comparison then it is best kept to one side. The rest does not demonstrate anything except the difference, and also that the basic blues can be pretty boring even when played by it's foremost artist. I bought this on vinyl in 1968 and can still remember how disappointed I was a year or so later when I got vol.2. There was a lot more of the same but without the intensity. Whoever compiled this first album did a very good job and got it right every time.
The reason is simply that there is no contrapuntal tension ... Read More:

This is the epitome of easy listening, as it evokes a time when everything was so less complicated. Some would say it tends towards the cheesy, but...bring it on.The songs remind me so much of when I was small and the radio was always on, and everyone sang along. so different from sitting glued to the TV today. This is a brilliant collection at a remarkable price. Some of the titles I was unfamiliar with, but all in all, a most welcome and enjoyable addition to my collection.

In its day a casualty of the chaos and confusion surrounding the frequently ridiculous entry qualifications for the Best Foreign Film Oscar - many superior films were ruled ineligible and those it was competing against were scarcely representative of the world's best - Indochine may not be great art, but it is an enjoyable example of the kind of old-fashioned good storytelling that Hollywood rarely produces anymore.

Set against the last days of the French occupation of what was to later become Vietnam, it uses the relationship between Catherine Deneuve's French plantation owner and her adopted Vietnamese daughter (Linh Dan Pham) as a mirror for the relationship between France and Vietnam. Like the American South, for the privileged few, the French IndoChina is a fairy tale land ... Read More:

I love Herb Alpert. The best known stuff on this album are the likes of the superlatively bouncy Spanish Flea, the sublime A Taste of Honey, the energetic Tijuana Taxi, Tetris theme Zorba the Greek and of course the theme to the original Casino Royale (the one with David Niven) which is so clever it hurts. But there's nothing on this album that doesn't delight.

Mostly it's instrumental, brass band work and very good brass it is. Like a Mariachi band. It's jolly and fun, and it gets me in a good mood and that makes it pretty fab stuff.
