I love Billie Holiday and have for a long time.
Her voice haunts my soul every time I hear it, it reminds me of the first time I heard it in a cafe in Soho London, time seem to stand still as she sang "Strange Fruit". This box set is a perfect start to her music and you can see the all other music from jazz to hip hop flowing through it, if you have never heard her sing then I plead with you to buy this boxset and start a journey that will take you to new highs. Just got into Michael and trying to get my hands on anything he has done, got his albums and the come fly with me dvd but this dvd is in a class of its own, loved it loved it loved it, he is so charismatic on stage, and the voice?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will love this, really good set list, bit of monkeying around bit of chat, but most of all, Michael, at his best.

Hynotic, subtle and the same time wonderfully soulful this record surely sits within the top five of all time Blue Note releases. It's the ultimate late night session. The consistently wonderfully Kenny Burrell who makes the difficult sound effortlessly simple gives a masterclass in Jazz guitar playing with an endlesss tapestry of smooth licks that melt into the instinctive groove of Stanley Turrentine's sax. It's a partnership made in heaven, they work so languidly off each other on, "Mule" The way Burrell brings in the track on,"Soul lament," with his emotive twanging are classic bars of music. I am also particularly fond of the waltz tempo on,"Wavy Gravy."

Glenn Miller was a wartime orchestra leader who died in a mysterious airoplane crash, which is explained in the DVD documentary 'Glenn Miller's Last Flight' (*recommended). So, born in 51 as I was, his genre of music was more in tune with my parent's generation, but it overspilled, and we heard quite a lot of it via 78's and the wonderfully drawling James Stewart playing his role in 'The Glenn Miller Story' which seemed to be on TV back then quite often (now also on DVD!)
So, even though the music was cringeworthy as far as our peer's were concerned, (we wouldn't have been 'Hip' in the mid-60's if they knew we held a light for Glenn Miller!), but in all honesty, some of his music gave you the old adrenaline rush / backbone shiver, nevertheless. This is an astonishing record! On paper the idea of a reggae cover of Dark Side Of The Moon sounds demented - but in practise it's truly fabulous. The All-Stars perform dub alchemy, conjuring roots rock out of prog rock like it was the most natural progression. Great Gig In The Sky had me sobbing at its beauty - honestly.
Any Floyd fans with a passing interest in reggae - or, alternatively, any reggae-ists with a passing interest in Pink Floyd - this is for you. Carefully treading that fine line between homage and parody, the All-Stars present a classic work of art in a new way that shines a white light into the prism of your heart. Once again Belleruche deliver a fantastic album. Yes I am a long term fan of this trio and I found this album showed a slightly different side to 'the 'Ruche' with a more bluesy, almost creole feel at times. I'm loving the funky faster tunes on this album - and agree with one of the other reviewers that De Boer's voice is used to great effect but I also think that Fabulous's guitar is allowed a starring role for the first time and this is welcome. The album does fail to capture some of the dynamism of the live performance and it can leave some of the production sounding sparse at times but I'm still giving it a 5 because I know it'll get a lot of play in my house!! I can't help but think that Belleruche are going places - get on the Express if you want to go too!

After "Bees And Things And Flowers," I was so looking forward to "Tales" (and maybe that was the problem)that I almost ripped the cd out of the posties hands.
But after a couple of listens I was ready to consign it to the "looks like they are on the downslope" section of my cd collection.The more laid back acoustic groove of what I thought was merely a stop gap release in "Bees....." remained and I was left thinking, where had they left their funkiness? HOWEVER......I am happy to report I was very very wrong. Having stuck with it "Tales..." is actually a very mature collection of songs from a band who are at the top of their playing/singing abilities.
