As so often with recordings raved about by the UK critical establishment, I found this a big let-down. This performance is no doubt very scholarly and accurate, but to me it's precious, petite and ultimately soporific. The booklet says they wanted to create the freshness and surprise of a premiere; for me they achieved the opposite.
If you REALLY want a Messiah with absolutely superb diction, try out Radu and the Ama Deus Ensemble from American Amazon. >>More Details |

A lovely introduction to Chet. But often with "best of" albums there is a lot of good music all crammed onto 1 cd, but I'm not complaining. I'm happy to have it in my Chet collection.

Make sure you do some reading up on Eric Dolphy before you buy this. Don't expect to hear anything resembling the winning Blue Note hard bop formula characteristic of the fifities and sixties. As far as Jazz goes this is way ahead of it's time, those who know the contemporary Jazz scene will know that there are plenty of acts out there who try and sound exactly like what you hear on this record.
OK, it's not easy listening. For me Dolphy's compositions are no way near as compelling as some of Ornette Colman's for example. It's quirky, mysterious, it has you scratching your chin trying to figure it all out. "Gazzelloni," starts off as very accessible before disappearing into some great flute loops. My mother has been a fan of Etta James for many years and has most of the songs featured on this album, on different LPs lying about the house. It's so brilliant to have them all on the one disc - it's handy. I am getting married at the end of june and we have decided to use "At Last" as our first song. Perfect start to a perfect day by a perfect singer.

This beautfully timed record stands shoulder to shoulder with, "No room for squares," as the classic in Mobley's body of work.
Hank's sweet, soulful sax effortlessly hums along on the operner and,"This I dig of you," accompanied by Chambers bass that just pings. Blakey had perfected his technique at this point and was at the very height of his powers, he works with the rest of the rhythm section like a magnificent steam train. It all slides along to perfection on the effortlessly classy,"Dig Dis," Mobley's round sax bouncing to the rhythm. When you listen to his playing it all sounds so leisurely, like he never has the need to stretch himself "Split Feelin," is a rolling bluesy number, again technically flawless. Antonio Carlos Jobim goes down with Lennon/McCartney, Gershwin, Amstrong as one of the most influential songwriter/stylists of the 20th century.
To judge the album on its own merits is one thing. Getz turns in small but perfectly formed solos. Astrid Gilberto's voice is ravishing, complementing husband Joao's voice with that incredibly restrained vulnerability that is the essence of Bossa. It is an album of incredible tenderness and instrospection. The studio atmosphere is very intimate with an almost homespun quality. For me its a five star album in its own right. Scraps and nuggets from a doomed feast. The paucity of salvageable material (no less than four versions of one track for example) backs up the now legendary accounts of the 'difficulties' John Mclaughlin and Tony Williams had with Jaco Pastorius... but inspite of it all the music veritably roars at times; each member an absolute master of his instrument. Forgive the tital, but how exactly do I define an album such as this, or indeed an artist like Mingus? This is the most undoubted five-star I have ever given, because, unlike most art, which either seems clear and gives you a good impression, or seems clear but gives you a banal impression, this does not seem clear ( in any of the multiple meanings of the term) , but gives you a transcendentally impressed feeling afterwards.
Certainly, it does seem quite gloomy. The title makes me think of some sort of lost scripture, with depressing implications for the fate of mankind, and the music is a series of movements circulating around the theme of damnation and torture in chains. To save space and time I'll say that Juan Mobili's review of this album is spot on, but I have few things to add. Firstly Lila's live show is excellent. The next time she and her fine band la Misteriosa are on tour do whatever you can to go to see them. The band arrangements are very strong too, beautifully mixing elements of many styles and traditions in a way that perfectly complements Lila's singing. My personal favourite on this disc is Ojo de Culebra, her duet with La Mari of the Spanish nuevo flamenco band Chambao.
