Mr Weller's songwriting credentials are not up for question in most quarters. What has troubled many of late has been the trudging, stodgy, wholegrain guitar music that has been churned out in both the studio and on the stage in the last 10 or so years.
"Days of Speed" showcases a run of fine songs delivered with soul, simplicity and just an acoustic guitar for backing.
Songs like "Everything Has A Price..." and "The Loved" shine up as great songs in this context.
Well worth a listen.

If you're expecting Stanley Road all over again then you're in for some disappointment. This isn't Paul's best album by a long way, but there are still some fine songs on here!

Worth buying in it's own right, but more so, for me, from the perspective that it got me into some of Ronnie Lane's solo stuff, which truly blew me away. When we remember The Small Faces, we almost inevitably think of Stevie, but check out some of Ronnie's own tunes, too, and you'll be as pleased as I was! We pass this way but once.....

Anything located in the eighties synth-swamp was likely to sound sterile, but this album, despite being waist deep in the stuff, largely overcomes the era's production values with a combination of wit, acidity and swagger. Of course, 'The Boys Of Summer' would be irresistible in any decade, just like 'Hotel California'. But there are several other tracks here that ooze class, including everything in the first half. The slower, Eaglish 'You're Not Drinking Enough' harks back more to the excellence of his 1970s output than anything else. Henley, though, sounds more liberated on the rocked up 'All She Wants To Do Is Dance', while the mini epic, 'Sunset Grill' is the highlight of the later tracks. If anything, this is an album to admire more now than when it ... Read More:

Just to echo the previous three reviews - this is a beautiful, beautiful album - the best by Paul Simon ? - probably. Sheer poetry set to subtle, complex but ultimately addictive melodies played with stunning musian-ship - utter bliss. At the moment, my favourite PS work next to Hearts and Bones.

Pro: All the songs you know and love
Con: Misses out 21 years of his career, not a lot of songs on this CD

Don't get me wrong. I have been into Paul McCartney for 20 years now. This album is a great introduction to him and his solo career, but an even better "Best Of" is Wingspan, which was released in 2001. It has more songs on it, and has a few more obscure songs on there. Furthermore, this album was released in 1987, and he has done 21 years of new material since then so you're missing out a sizeable chunk of his career. I do like all the songs on this album, but for me, I feel his best songs are his more obscure ones. My favourite Macca albums, which I will review all of on here over time are: McCartney, Off The Ground, Band On The Run, Flowers ... Read More:

Just as a general pointer, Wings albums are counted as anything after Ram and McCartney (so 1972-1980) and anything up to the Japan tour. I felt it appropriate to clarify this as Paul McCartney has, after this time, released solo albums as just Paul McCartney, although these are not relevant to reviewing Wings'Greatest.

I do like all the tracks on this album and it's good for the very casual listener who likes all the hits and does not want to commit to buying more albums but it's not, in my opinion, Wings' Greatest songs. Or not all of them. I love these songs but there are some very obscure beauties, such as Helen Wheels, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five, Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me), Mrs Vandebilt, Bluebird (and these are just songs from one album; ... As a michael fan i own all of his records and then some. however i wouldn't suggest to really buy this album and i haven't either. It's just the first cd of his huge history album. My advice would be to buy that instead, because you not only get all of the songs on this album but it comes with an album of (what was) new material, and in my opinion is a lot better value.

However if the only songs of michaels are the ones on this album that you like then buy this. but value for money history is better

I clearly remember the 1979 release of this album. I was not a dylan fan then and I think it fair to say that this album would not be the ideal gateway.

Roll on 30 years and I have been converted to the wonders of Dylan. Ok it just took me a bit longer to get it than the rest of you.

This album still remains an enigma. It sounded hoplessely out of date in 1979, time has not improved this offering. With Jerry Scheff on base I guess obvious parallels could be drawn with Presley's Vegas years. Flutes, annoying saxes this is surely a live low point. It does not get more 'Dylan live in Vegas' than this.

Put another way how did we get from 'Hard Rain' to Budokan? Search me. To be fair there are a few gems on there but they are few ... Read More:

Having read all the other reviews I am actually stuck for words. Pretty much anything I write will not do justice to this wonderful piece of musical wizardry. I can't add much more to what has alreay been said.

PG takes the rhythms and sounds of established, but unheard of, musicians from Africa, Asia and the middle east and marries them with western musical forms and technology. This album could have been an utter disaster. But it has been masterfully done. Forget Peter Gabriel. Forget those involved in its production. Forget that anyone even had a hand in its recording/ writing. This album is bigger than all that. Just listen to it. Phenomenal!!

liked gabriels work with genesis and ive heard one or two tracks from his solo work that i enjoyed too. took a chance with this one cos to be honest ive never sat through an entire solo album so i thought id give it a go.

what we have is fairly cold and passionless electro-pop, not really saying much at all and pretty meaningless throughout. its all very well played and produced but the songs? i dunno. they dont seem that strong to me folks. theyre all fairly one-paced and samey. maybe im missing the point? i dont think so though. to me this sounds like just another over-lauded and over-rated performer who doesnt really warrant his high status
