i heard some of the stuff off HTID in the sun and was impressed so i saw this and thought why not i got it put it in the hifi cranked up the volume and was blown away quality song after quality song a true bargain

I saw the film first and bought myself this cd afterwards. I love every song on it. If it's the music from the film that you want it's all on here. I'd highly recommend this cd.

Richard Ashcroft has never been one to undersell his own brilliance - his solo career may have been weak, and the first two Verve albums excellent, but on Urban Hymns the hype finally justified the mouth. Just as the Britpop bubble was about to burst, the Verve reformed for one last album, to sign off at their peak (although, obviously, they have since reformed again).
Urban Hymns is the distillation of everything great about the Verve, but with an extra poppy edge. The band generally reign in their psychedelic jams of the previous two albums, with notable exceptions being the fantastic 'Rolling People' and even better 'Catching The Butterfly.' Most of the material on this compiliation has already been included on other Classic FM CD's from the last 2 years. Also when you think of anthems, I think of uplifting, upbeat high tempo music, however this is none of these. However there is the odd track which comes pretty close to the mark.
Having said this, the compilation is not unlistenable, although prehaps a bit more thought could have been put into the song choices. In future I feel Classic FM is in danger of doing another "Zadok the Priest" with some of these songs by thrashing them to death in placing them in every single album. Cohen made three classic albums with John Lissaeur at the helm: 1974's New Skin For The Old Ceremony, 1979's Recent Songs, but at the apex of these achievements stands 1984's Various Positions, in that it paved the way for a new audience to discover Leonard Cohen afresh. This wasn't done by just adding the odd synthesised drone here and there, for there is the same continuity of themes and musical genres threaded consistently through the works (compare New Skin's 'Why Don't You Try?' or 'I Tried To Leave You' alongside Recent Songs' 'Came So Far For Beauty' or 'The Smokey Life', i.e., and you'll find they sit naturally next to tracks like 'Hallelujah' or 'Coming Back To You', whereas 'Night Comes On' and 'If It Be Your Will' would not have sounded ... I have to say I am not a fan of Miley or Hannah but I do actually like 3 of the songs... 7 Things: (I don't think it's about Nick Jonas because his friends aren't jerks) it's really catchy and you can kinda vent your thoughts and feelings when listening to it, Full circle is really catchy and fly on the wall is just cool!!
Wake up america... I'm sorry Miley but you're asking america to wake up when your probably worse than them... talk about contradicting. I think the song breakout it too corny, I was hoping it would be catchy like Hilary Duff's Wake up but I was disappointed with what it actually was. Well I have to agree with Hot Angel and say that the number of bad or indifferent reviews I've read for this album in the press do not do it justice. The new material is great, and the added production polish does not detract from the quality of the songs or the CSS sound. Ignore the naysayers - if you like CSS and the first album then buy this one too!

This album is twice as good as his previous effort and I have therefore given it two stars. His voice is still annoying though. Maybe someone should suggest to him (nicely) he does an instrumental album. Yikes..

Stumbled across Katy Perry by chance a few weeks ago, but now I am hooked! Great to hear a lady who sounds like she hasn't been sucking at hellium balloons.
"I Kissed A Girl" is definately the stand out track that most people will be familiar with, but fear not if you think that's the album's only strong material. "Hot n Cold" is a great track to get you moving. "Thinking of You" will tug at your heart strings. "Ur so gay" is a great giggle. "Whilst "Waking up in Vegas" and "Self Inflincted" are good ol' fashioned feel good pop. One of the few albums I am happy to listen to all the way through, again and again. >>More Details |
