The song Flashdance is of course part of musical history now, so of course you want it...is the album from which it came a gold-mine of similar hits...? Well, nearly. There are some great songs here, in fact I'd buy the album alone for the two very strange tracks "He's A Dream" by Shandi and "Manhunt" by Karen Kamon" which are SOOOO 80's you just have to love them. Then there are two tracks by major artists (Donna Summer and Laura Branigan) that don't appear on any other album by them (as far as I know). Both pretty good, unusual productions. This is of course the sound track to the Hugh Grant/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy Music and Lyrics. If you've seen the film and enjoyed it, you'll love this. It's got all the versions described in the blurb on the Amazon item, and although I inevitably skip all of the quite frankly terrible (but deliberately so, so it's not that bad) Cora Corman songs, I really, really love the ones that involved Hugh Grant.
They include the brilliantly bad 80s records by his character's band Pop, joyous in their accurate send up of the 80s pop scene, bad because they are more schmaltzy than you can imagine. Having seen a pro-am production of this show I can say that it is fantastic.I have seen it three times,and at each performance there has been a standing ovation. The musical numbers are wonderful. Take a listen and judge for yourself.

If you're reading this review and thinking about buying this album stop reading this review and get your charge card out. This is, bar none, the best compilation album I've ever come across. I'm shamed to admit I was unfamiliar with many of the tracks and artists until I saw the film. In hindsight I now understand the magnitude of the gaping whole this was in the development of my muscial appreciation. A vista of 70's soul-funk really opened up for me post-Jackie-Brown. >>More Details |

Right, im a massive John Williams fan, and when I saw this box set, i had to add it to my collection. Kinda wished i hadnt now though. The Recordings on this cd are for the most part average at best, with one or two exceptions. Being a musician myself, im probably a lot more nit picky than most consumers would be though. The orchestra, and in particular the brass section, is very scrappy in many of the tracks. Its almost as if they are sight reading their parts, as there are very many mistakes in places, and the tuning is also diabolical a lot of the time (with some horendous vibrato from the trumpets in some of the indiana jones themes, it sounds more like a new orleans jazz band in places). I've always been a fan of Pam Ayres- the way she reads her poetry has me crying with laughter. Her ingenius poem 'Oh I wish I'd looked after me teeth' is read with such hilarity that you just can't help but laugh. Every poem is wonderfully read and this tape is a fantastic bargain!

I'd been hearing great things about the 12th Man (a.k.a. Billy Birmingham) on the grapevine for some time, so decided to give this one a try; I wasn't disappointed.
Despite numerous expletives and innuendos (be warned this is really adult humour) this is one of the best comedy recordings I have heard for a long time. The spoof Asian cricketer names, constant niggle between the commentators, ridiculous scorelines and constant emphasis on Richie Benaud's pronunciation of the "s" and "t" (i.e. 222 for 2) are HILARIOUS, and the whole script is dotted with some razor-sharp one-liners. If you're familiar with Australia's Channel Nine cricket commentary you may get more out of this, but in places (even to the uninitiated) this is a rip-snorter! >>More Details |

The score for the film The Nightmare before Christmas is brilliant in its own strange way. Both the music and the lyrics are written by Danny Elfman, and he also sings the main character of jack Skellington.
The songs are delightful and variated, and you discover something new in the arrangement, every time you listen to them. Besides, the instrumental tracks are beautiful and melancholy, a nice contrast to the humourous and often lively songs. If you like the film or are just a little bit interested in music, you should definetly buy this CD. It has so many great tunes, and the orchestration is just perfect.
