This CD wasn't so much released as it escaped. It has to be the worst recording of the songs from both the show and the film that I have ever heard.
Judi Dench does her usual professional job on her songs, believable, quirky and full of character. However, Jonathan Pryce seems to have no idea of what the MC is about at all. His German accent has been acquired from the "Accents R Us" bargain basket, and he presents none of the menace and joy that are present in the MC's songs. Maria Friedmann is simply winsome in Sally's character songs, though she does work to put across the Englishness of Isherwood's Sally in the Kit Kat Klub songs. Its been remarked that no longer finding derek and clive funny is an indication of one's passage into the adult world.If this is correct I am pleased to continue my adolescence indefinately. After hearing this collection of dialogues, opening a pot of loganberry ( or indeed any) jam will never be the same again. Cubicles too assume a particular resonance and will demand that little extra consideration upon entrance.
When the grins dry up, adolescence may well have been breached,but you will have been welcomed to the world of senility, a far more charmless experience. >>More Details |

If you know about the Goons then you probably like them. They were the inspiration for Monty Python. The Goonshow was on the radio nearly every week for ten years, so the question is: where to start? My answer is this album. Everyone has their own opinion as to the best episodes, but if you don't like Napoleon's Piano then there's no hope for you! This album has has never been far away from my CD player since it was released around 23 years ago. The music surprised a lot of people at the time because it wasn't completely representative of the Abba style. In the theatre the music is completely overwhelming. I managed to see the production 3 times, twice with the original cast and that is why I would recommend this recording above all others. Some of the players are different but the American, Russian & Florence were as heard on the CD's. The Swedish touring version mentioned further down is excellent, in that it includes the ending as we knew it & other bits and pieces. Still vocally this is the superior version and no one has sung Florence better than Elaine Paige. A pity it wasn't recorded ... Read More:

If you have never listened to minimalist music this should be your point of departure. I have played this CD to the unsuspecting, as background music, and in the process won over the even the most ardent sceptics.

So who would have thought of teaming Bring Crosby, Satchmo Armstrong AND Frank Sinatra together with the music of Cole Porter to dream up a "society story" around the well-heeled Newport Rhode Island clan? Well it works as a stylish collection of romantic tunes with laid back performances by Crosby. Sinatra brings a hard edge to the dialogue and albeit a slightly unusual pairing with Celeste Holm as magazine reporter/photographer duo. Grace Kelly is beautiful but almost too clean cut to be real and frankly over acts throughout. Louis Armstrong and his band adds spice in a few places and the "Well Did You Evah" duo by Crosby & Sinatra is a classic. This CD made for spectacular listening, i was in Treorchy on the night this was recorded and listening to it again all these years later bought back some memories. This is welsh humour at it's best and would probably be lost on anyone else, but for the pure parody of the songs it's really worth a listen.

This is probably one of the best soundtracks to any film I've heard. It added perfectly to each moment in the film, but stands up in it's own right as a excellent collection of tracks. This is a great album to kick back to whilst reading, or chilling on lazy Sunday afternoons and if you loved the film, this album will not disappoint.

I have never been into classical music, however the TV programs Maestro and Last Choir standing (I know trash TV... sorry) made me realise I did like some classical music. So time to test that theory, and of course this CD fitted the bill perfectly, a bit of everything and 99% you will probably know. Good album, maybe I may have discovered culture :-)

I bought this cd because Amazon offered it as a double deal for under a tenner! I loved the last song - Somewhere over the Rainbow and thought why not treat yourself to it, it costs nothing! Anyway,it is such a beautiful collection and I totally love it. Very relaxing to listen to but in no way boring, it lulls you, then teases you, then absorbs you - superb. I think it allows you to have a glass of wine and ponder or as I just did peel the potatoes and ponder!!! There's more than one gem on this cd - it is a collection of gems. Treat yourself!
