Did anyone see the recent TV portrait of the Copper family, and listen to Bob's reminiscences? Sadly, Bob is no longer with us, but what a wealth of memories and fabulous pictures of rural life is present in these recordings. The influence of the family's singing - their harmonic style, the songs themselves - their imfluence is impossible to quantify. They are the foundation of so many modern-day folk bands, that they cannot be listed. Interspersed with the songs are snippets of chat which show still further the mood and feel of life in the deep countryside of the the nineteen-fifties and before. I've enjoyed Buffy's work for a very long time but needed to update from vinyl. This CD is worth 5 stars but only got four because I'm a bit miffed that some of my favourite tracks never made it onto this CD. It is a good combination of her work although one or more tracks were new to me and a little too hard-core country for my taste. And nice to hear the songs without the crackle from scratches in my vinyl albums.

I read a review of this in Acoustic Guitar magazine and was intrigued enough to buy the CD. I found myself listening to it again and again, having it on whilst doing other stuff around the house, or sat in the office tip-tapping away on my PC. There is something enchanting about the music and it instils a sense of calm. The sound of the accordion is wonderful and the fusion of oud, accordion and piano is sublime.
To some extent, the music seems non-descript, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Like dissecting a work of 19th century Russian literature (which I had to do at university - ugh!), it seems to detract from the overall feel if one tries to describe the album. Why should it be necessary to write a review of this CD? After all, it is a faithful digital version of the Columbia LP of the same title (CS 9416), presumably well known to potential purchasers who want something that can be played on their CD equipment. But then.... maybe not everyone out there grew up in the postwar years of folk music, flower power, civil rights, anti-war movements... the lot. Maybe there are those who wonder what their old folks keep remembering and harping on. Well: here is the answer. You won't find his singles and albums in any pop charts, but Ewan MacColl is one of folk music's legends. He did much to preserve traditional British folk songs, many of which he recorded. He also wrote many songs, one of which (The first time ever I saw your face) was inspired by Peggy Seeger, brother of America's legendary folk singer, Pete Seeger. The song eventually became a major international pop hit for Roberta Flack, by which time Ewan and Peggy were married. One of Ewan's earlier marriages produced Kirsty MacColl, a great pop singer of the eighties. If you want just one CD that gives you an overview of Joan Baez's career and contains her greatest hits, well...you won't find one. Her career has been too long and varied for that. She was at Woodstock and at Live Aid. She covered traditional English, Spanish and French folk songs, protest and mainstream pop. Joan's is the finest female voice of the 60's folk revival and protest movement -- pure and melodious and true. This particular CD has too much Dylan for my taste. Good at the time, these now sound very dated. But that is an accurate reflection of the period. Doc sings and performs in what could be categorised asseveral different styles: blues, old-time, fiddle tunes, gospel and more.This compilation focusses on one particular style: country blues. Somecompilations can feel like they've just been thrown together. This onedoesn't. It feels like someone who actually cares put it together. It'svery representative of his work and it's good and chunky. If you'vealready got lots of Doc's work then maybe there's not likely to be muchnew here. But it might still be worth buying just as a great CD. If you'relooking for a cross section of Doc's work then this is well worth it.There's also a companion 'tunes only' album and together they are a reallygood set.

When I first heard Karen Dalton back in 1999 on her debut album what struck me was how she could take a song and make it something different. 'It hurts me too', well known by Elmore James is taken away from an electrified Blues/old-style R&B workout & made into a 'folk song'. 'Sweet substitute' so enamoured me that I sought out & bought the CD containing the original by Jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton. Karen loved songs, and she could do a lot with them, like Glen Gould in the classical sphere, she took music she loved & played it the way she wanted to. Her version of 'In a station' is equal to, but different from, that by The Band.
