A banal, irritating record. The lyrics are full of cliches, and the music is unexceptional. Only "Natural Beauty" rises above the dross.

I bought this album when it came out, on vinyl. Neil Young had been only partly known to me - i tended to think "acoustic" and "folky", which were not the kind of words i was into at that age. John Peel said that "nothing before had prepared him for the magnificence of Zuma" or words to that effect. As a keen JP listener and admirer, i thought I'd give it a go. Fabulous! It was as rock-y and discordant in places as you could wish. The guitaring was a revelation. Great songs, love-it-or-hate-it voice/singing - which i did love. The acoustic numbers and gentler tracks were great songs too, and perfect to sing when you were having a drink with your mates. "I've been looking for a lover, but I haven't met her yet - she'll be nothing like i picture her to be." ... Read More:

I remember this album when it came out in 1965. I wasn't interested in the controversy - the music just sounded great. I had never heard anything like it...... I still don't know exactly how you would describe this style. Anyway , when it came out it became iconic for some people, which includes me.
Although it's of it's time it's still unquestionably listenable today - interpret the lyrics if that is your whim - you don't have to, in my opinion, to merely enjoy the album at first listening.

"Want One" is, all things considered, Rufus Wainwright's best album. It is here that he perfected his baroque take on musical magic realism (which he fairly sustained through to "Want Two"), before his frankly surprising creative collapse on "Release The Stars" and subsequent escape into the qualitatively inconsistent cabaret pastiche of "Rufus Does Judy".
Here, proceedings get started on a pleasantly leftist note with "Oh What A World". The appropriately named "I Don't Know What It Is" cranks things up considerably, but keeps its meaning to itself. The pleasant electronic keyboard extravaganza of "Vicious World" recalls Stevie Wonder, while "Pretty Things" proves Rufus and plain piano go quite well together on their own.
"Harvester Of Hearts" is a delightfully ... Read More:

Amazed at the review of this album, which is mainstream and forgettable. A real disappointment given the high praise Cara Dillon has received. Go out and buy Rachel Unthank!

I like a variety of music from country through to thrash metal. Enjoy listening to Roy Harper and Bob Dylan so I thought I would give Neil Young a try. Knew nothing about this album before I bought it but the gravely, drawn, folk/rock melodies are simply excellent. I definetly will be purchasing more.

The Haar which rolls off the north sea and obliterates the islands and fishing boats from those who would stand on Fife's East Neuk shores appears to act as some sort a magic creative cloak if we measure the incredible number of musicians and artists who have gained inspiration from the land and sea in this wind blown corner of Scotland.
One of East Neuk most famous sons...relatively speaking...is the cat loving, real ale quaffing scruff bag, James Yorkston who has marked out his territory from fellow Fence Collective artists like the more rock/pop orientated King Creosote by virtue of the quality of his songwriting and his musicianship which is certainly more traditionally folk based than the aforementioned KC who nevertheless is a huge talent in his own right.

Listening to Sandy Denny's voice makes you realise how much the music industry short-changes us these days. Sublime and unaffected, young yet embedded with wisdom, it sweeps you away like none of today's wannabes ever will. 'Sandy' also benefits from first class arrangements, production and musicianship, with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick adding valuable guitar and violin respectively. Sneaky Pete contributes some of his best pedal steel playing too, lending a country tinge to some of the tracks. By and large, this is folk at the edge of rock. 'It'll Take A Long Time' is an expansive, epic opening, while Denny's take on 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' is one of the best Dylan covers you'll hear.

There are many breathtaking passages, such as the multi-tracked vocal on 'Quiet ... Read More:
