This is as fine an introduction to the works of Leonard Cohen as could be imagined. The track list, selected by the man himself, covers almost every period of his recorded output (Cohen is not prolific in the way, say, Bob Dylan is, or Neil Young), but I do feel some truly great stuff has been overlooked, i.e. the hushed, but haunting version of 'Story Of Isaac' from 1973's LIVE SONGS, which is one of the most profound things that anyone has ever written, the great live recordings from FIELD COMMANDER COHEN: Tour Of 1979, which admittedly was not released until after THE ESSENTIAL LEONARD COHEN appeared. Of those songs, I feel the title track is as good and epic a song as any he's recorded, and the version from NEW SKIN FOR THE OLD CEREMONY ... Read More:

All the 29 (so far) 1 star reviews are not reviews of the music but of the marketing of the 3CD version. Amongst them are some very angry long standing Dylan fans who refuse to even buy any of the versions, not merely the over priced deluxe version. Well, thats their loss.
I started listening to Dylan as a teenager in the early 60's and have always felt that the first three albums from the electric period were the peak of an amazing career. This new collection is another wonderful peak that has enabled me to revisit the period they cover and add to my appreciation of his later career. I have not yet found a song to better my personal Dylan favourite 'Desolation Row' but there are several that come close after a few weeks of listening ... Read More:

What an absolutely magnificent release this is.From the soulful, upbeat strut of the opener "You Are The Best Thing" all the way to the hushed beauty of the title track which closes proceedings , Ray and his cohorts simply never put a foot wrong. It is ,i believe, a modern classic and a firm contender for Album Of The Year .
I came to this release with no knowledge of this guy's previous work , i'd heard his name and read about him but never got around to checking out his music. I cannot therefore tell you how this new work compares to previous releases , what i can tell you , without doubt , is that this is a CD i've been playing constantly for the past 3 or 4 weeks now and i've never got bored yet , in fact it just seems to get better every time i play ... I can respect Robert Plant for his work with Led Zeppelin (nearly 40 years ago) and Alison Krauss is a major talent with the Union Station but this just does not work. The production by T Bone Burnett is good but the material is poor and boring. It neither one thing (Rock) nor another (Country/Bluegrass). Having read the reviews beforehand I borrowed this CD from my library prepared for a probable disappointment and it certainly lived up to that.

The innovation taken by the Pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is ground breaking. They initially did this with Parallel Tracks, a must if you do not have it, and have yet again taken it a step further. It is not a traditional album by any means which I like as 'traditional' bagpipe music, although very enjoyable is similar across the vain of bands. This innovative and emotive style is truly enjoyable and heart raising and I know the challenges the band have met and overcome to achieve this album are commendable to say the very least.

For many hardcore fans, Belle and Sebastian's "BBC Sessions" will doubtless be the most eagerly anticipated release of 2008. This collection has been in the pipeline for a number of months now, but the final release has been delayed for various reasons.
Still...the wait is over, and "The BBC Sessions" is with us. With a live CD as an added bonus! Hurrah!
So, to the music :- We have here some marvellous renditions of the band's early material. On classics such as "The State I Am In" and "Judy" certain instruments need a tune up...guitar strings buzz occasionally and the odd vocal falls flat. Of course, these occurences serve to heighten the immense charm of these exquisite songs. To listen to the early sessions is akin to sitting in a rehearsal ... Read More:

Agree with most of the reviews listed. If, like me, you went to Uni in the early 90's and have been a fan of that genre ever since you'll have almost grown up with Nick Bracegirdle's music and all the myriad offferings it inspired and spawned
From the days of saltwater to the excellent maddening crowds CD, his music has always evolved, always delivered and always impressed
I first heard the song Case of You in the film Practical Magic and thought how wonderful it was. I bought the film soundtrack (the whole music selection for the film was pretty good) and then i bought the album Blue to see what the rest of Jonis work was like.
I fell in love with the album so completely, that now i've moved to MP3 and sold 99% of my CD's i can't bear to part with this one. One of the others is Court & Spark.
The music is so simple, the strings, drums, and her voice- the most wonderful voice i have ever heard, conveying such emotion that the music and words combined make the whole album an amazing rollercoaster of feelings and thoughts.
I'd recommend to anyone who has ever felt any kind of emotion.

I have heard this album a number of times now and each time I find something else to like about it. She is a very young lady with an old soul. Great stuff.
