Classic and timeless stuff, a collection of all the good old songs. The technical quality is higher than you would expect in view of the vintage of some of these recordings, so the transfer has ben really well done. For 6 quid, you can't go wrong.

I became a fan of Uncle Earl after seeing them in concert and bought their CDs. This group was recommended to me and I bought the CD. It is old timey accoustic music played to a very high standard by a group of 3 who appear to enjoy what they are doing. The music has a feel of authenticity. For me, they will not replace Uncle Earl but they are deserving a place next to them in my collection. If you like Uncle Earl, you will probably enjoy this as well. Enjoyable.

To tell the truth there is very little I can add that hasn't already been said by those reviewers more knowledgeable and eloquent. Most here obviously feel the same way I do about this music Still there is something about "The Bairns" that creates a need to share my delight.
I discovered this album as part of my annual buying of the "Mercury Prize shortlist". Suffice to say all of the others have already faded away into the background and pall in comparison to this exquisite piece of work.
I remember the Guardian blabbing on about The Winterset when this was released but did the shameful "folk: I don't really do folk" thing and ignored it. My embarrassment at that earlier narrowness of vision is luckily smothered by my sheer joy ... Read More:

"Liege and Lief" was Fairport's first album that was almost entirely inspired by traditional British music. The band had previously released 3 albums during a relatively short period of time, and the repertoire had been a mixture of pop, rock and American and British folk.
In May 1969 after the recording of the previous album "Unhafbricking" the band had a terrible road accident which took the lives of drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's girlfriend Jeannie.
Other band-members were injured in the crash and the group were close to splitting up, but with their wounds healing up they eventually decided to continue with new members Dave Swarbrick and Dave Mattacks.
Eliza is a huge talent- writing , playing and a voice like no other, but for me this CD seems to have lost the sound and emotion and subtlety that I love about much of her work.
Big sound, but unsatisfying , maybe less is more?

This is simply one of the most joyous albums I own, and I have over 3,000! The mood starts out mellow and lifts higher and higher. If you're not dancing around the room by track 3, you probably need anti-depressants. This is music anyone can enjoy, not just those beardy World Music aficionados. You shouldn't hesitate. Really.

Listening to the Mammas and the Papas was a real nostalgia trip but how I hate CD's with tracks that fade out before they finish, it totally spoils the experience. I have a vision of a man behind the stage at a live performance turning a big volume control down leaving the group playing and singing silently to a bemused audience. Had the tracks all been full length I would have given this CD 4 stars.

Why oh why have I only just discovered this wonderful man? I have been listening solidly all day to Over the Rainbow and Kaulana Kawaihae, and can't get enough! Both tracks are just so moving, especially knowing Iz is no more. I still have to listen to the other tracks! I have already orderd another cd and that will not be the last. What a shame he wasn't more widely known. Tell everyone about this amazing talent.
