Years ago a friend made a tape with Miriam Makeba's songs for me and I listened to it to the point of tearing it. It is great to know that my favourites are other people's favourites and this collection is just that. All my favourite Miriam Makeba hits and many more. She is arguably the best female African singer there is and she is not stepping away yet. This is the CD you that will keep me warm and dancing around the Xmas tree this year and probably many years to come. I really liked Katie's first two albums but delayed buying this one for over 6 months because of all the poor reviews.
And, having finally decided "what the heck,I'll see for myself", I was disappointed when I first played it through - despite having low expectations because of the reviews. Then I played it again and it wasn't quite so bad. And then I played it a lot in the car (& had the other albums there for comparison). And it grew and grew and grew on me. And now it is probably my favourite album of hers. My favourite tracks have varied over time, and I probably still feel that the middle is a little weaker. Kate Rusby has a lovely voice and the arrangements of this collection of songs are sensitive. What's not to like? Well there is one big flaw for me - the lyrics. It's partly that for a 21st century girl to be writing songs about maidens, knights and castles seems odd. This is not a complaint about people singing folk songs. Those songs were about their times but it's strange to hear a woman with her own website writing as if she were a medieval troubadour.
But it gets worse. One of the best songs on the album is John Barbury great vocal, lovely accompaniment. But the words get in the way. Here's an example. I am a great admirer of Maddy prior, not least because to me she represents the true voice of English Folk Music and is not afraid to champion the 'English' song in this day and age of so called correctness. English Folk Music is amongst the best music in the world and this CD is no exception. There are some great melodies here both sung and played so well that it is a joy to listen to. I cannot imagine a world without Maddy's music - with or without Steeleye Span and the Carnival band that she sings with. To me the real gem of this collection is 'Magpie', her own composition which was shelved for over forty years until now and never fails to send a shiver down my spine and a tear to my eye whenever I play it. Not heard the VHS Video in a while but this is so much better! Sound quality not the best on a DVD but a vast improvement on VHS. More songs, about 20 mins extra and Bono hasn't yet learned his stage craft. The Edge looks very un-rockstar as does Adam with his curly hair, Larry looks like he's still in (primary) school and Bono has the most ridiculuous hairdo (even by his standards).
I could have done without Surrender & Seconds but the rest of the songs are storming, from Out of Control through to 40. This is a very loud DVD, so turn it up and destroy the neighbourhood! U2 when they were little! >>More Details |

Before watching Sharpe I had never heard of John Tams, and quite frankly my music collection was the poorer for it! This album is a fantastic mix of score from the shows and traditional folk songs of the period performed by Tams and his mate Barry Coope with an amazing guest performance from the wonderful Kate Rusby. A must have for all fans of John Tams, Kate Rusby, Sharpe and great British folk music!

I haven't stopped playing this album since I bought it a few weeks ago. It's haunting, beautiful, buy it! Mary, track 7, is just heart stopping.

This is a masterpiece, this is how records should be done, crisp sounds, a great and passionate voice, an intensity that is difficult to see in other records. I think this is his best performance ever, too bad he was not there to listen to it. His version of "Further up on the road" is just unbelievable, I think Springsteen might have cried when he listened to it. Similarly "four strong winds" is really good and better, for example, than Neil Young's version on Comes a Time.
A record that will make you cry, with passion and soul. I don't give 5 stars easily but this is just too good. >>More Details |
