There has always been something about Leonard Bernstein that I have found appealing, he was a real innovator, difficult, temperamental, but what a phenomenal talent! I enjoy his openess to broader musical forms then the strictly classical, and to me that adds credibility to his work. What Bernstein interprets usually has something different about it, particularly those recordings from his later years. Generally speaking you either like or loathe those interpretations. But in these earlier recordings I think what we are hearing is a young man excelling in his god given talent for music. The Shostakovich Symphony No 5 is intense, moving and ecstatic, I would have bought this set for that alone. But all the works are, in my humble but prejudiced ... Read More:
