This is by far one of my fave worship CDs. The songs really minister, especailly tracks like Pray for Rain which I found very uplifting, the lyrics helped me thru a difficult time. Other tracks to listen out for all the title track 'Sound of heaven, We thirst for You, Rain Dance.
This album is a must for all worship fans out there.
The singing is good, but perhaps a little underpowered & Pinnock's
conducting is stylish & lively. There is an excellent note by Anthony
Hicks,& a synopsis but no text. The great scene in the work is the one
where the writing appears on the wall. Alas, there is an unnecessary
disc change in the middle of it, completely destroying the flow.

Thomson Smillie lectures and publishes extensively on the arts and runs hiw own publishing company, The OperaBox. "An Introduction to Puccini's 'La Bohème'" is one of a series of recordings telling the history of opera and introducing works to a broader audience. Smillie was a founding staff member of the Scottish Opera, spent five years as the artistic director of the Wexford International Opera Festival in Ireland, has been General Manager of the Opera Company of Boston and the general director of Kentucky Opera for sixteen years. In his career he has produced more than 100 operas and stage directed over 30. Consequently, he has the bona fides to introduce Puccini's most popular opera to listeners.

Joyful recording of a very under-rated opera, with crystal clear acoustics. The Philharmonia Orchestra is outstanding and the CD is worth buying just to listen to the overture. If I am being very picky then I have to say that the singing is a little uneven in parts; for my tastes Ninetta sometimes too dramatic; Giannetto too down beat. But nevertheless a 2-disc set I am very glad to own.
