I totally agree with the reviewer that complained about the difficulty to get into the box. I too was foxed until I stopped trying to open it instinctively and had a concentrated thoughtful good look at the box. Whoever came up with the design... please, let others do the job. Packaging isn't meant to be a puzzle to be solved.
As for the software itself... hmmm... I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive after reading the divided opinions here and I guess my three stars indicate that I, too, am divided about it. Maybe once I have used it for a year or so, I might get the hang of it but as of now, I am still missing the old version and trying to work out the new. Have some people been using a different version of this software from me? (or trying to run it on OS9 maybe?)
It's not perfect (lack of VBA support, lack of advanced features in Excel, slow to start up, not fully compatible with spaces), but I think it's quite good and definitely worthy of four stars (I'm running the latest update 12.1.4 at the time of writing). iWork '08 is not a good idea, as although Apple say it's compatible with the word and excel formats, it doesn't display the advanced formatting in these files properly. The only serious competition Office 2008 has is OpenOffice 3.0 (which now runs natively on the mac). >>More Details |

Having a house full of PC's of varying ages and a mac. I am loathed to buy
more licenses as I already have older pc and a mac version of office. Get "Open Office - 3" virtually free and run on any machine and save files as microsft versions .doc .ppt etc and vice versa. I am thinking of stripping vista off my childs new lap top and going over to a linux version and avoid the other rip off that is microsoft security software >>More Details |

Has all the features expected from MS for a product of this caliber and runs like a champ. Has added in the ability of sharing information with other users over the network.

Let it be clear: this is a great household package. It is great for producing letters, flyers, greeting cards etc. on the fly. But let it be clear also: this is no educational package, as it is lacking presentation software (powerpoint). If you have kids/students, opt for Office student licence, or the free OpenOffice.

It's always sound commercial sense to shoot yourself in the foot by alientaing your core customers. I'm a self confessed early adopter, so I knew this would be a challenge but after many months I've given up and moved to Open Office!

Once you get to grips with this it is fine, it does (I think) reduce eye strain due to the larger size buttons, BUT THIS VERSION TAKES WEEKS TO LEARN.
It's just different that's all, you will waste valuable time learning it, which as we all know costs money! If you are used to using the key shortcuts and F keys this is good as they all still work. Big problem though is if you have more than 1 machine and it operates on the older versions (guess where this is going) which will open and save a 2003 file but try it the other way round and you are stuck and a lot of your clients may not have upgraded yet so watch out. Wow, this took so long to install I thought my PC had died! Once installed, the start up wizard was a great way to help novices like myself set up home/company details. There's also a Quick Start window which launches the most commonly-used tasks like invoicing, which saves having to scour the main interface. If you have other Microsoft products (I have Word 2007), you'll like how well they work together. So far I have only printed out (with ease), several invoices for a freelance journalist friend. But I plan to use this to manage my household and eBay accounts and will update this review when I have had more time to explore all the features. But I already like it. I have just upgraded to Office 2007 but find myself still using 2003 Pro.
Why? It's just that good. The layout is by far the best out of all the office products, and the menu driven system allows you to create very professional work with little input. There are even templates and wizards to help you along the way. All the major office programs are here except FrontPage, which most people wouldn't use anyway, unless into web design. Overall, I have given it 5 stars as it is the best value for money as well as being a very complete office package. Recommended! >>More Details |
