I have only given this one star because I am not sure it can have no stars on this review. But that's what they deserve. Don't buy this or any other AVG product. Their customer service is non existant; no one on the other end of the phone, no one on the other end of the emails. This, once loaded, has crashed my browser, I have no access to the internet and no one has even tried to help me despite my numerous pleading messages. I have unloaded it and read all the 'facts' and help pages on the website and then re-loaded it and tried to sort it out and still no joy. I am trying to get my money back. Suffice to say I am furious!

Once installed your instantly protected. It scans and updates without causing a fuss, other than the occasional notice that somethings tried to attack you dont even notice its there, and I'm sure you can turn this off if you do so wish.

Perhaps it's me but a security programme that informs you that threats are present on your computer ('Look, here they are' it triumphantly crows) should allow you to delete them. Oh no, can't do that, it says to me. Best leave them where they are. Oh, by the way, it further states, every time you connect to the internet I am going to pop up and ask you for clearance. Oh, have you already said yes many times and asked me to remember it? Well, never mind. Perhaps I should disable your internet connection until you speak to me more politely.

Having installed this prouduct I feel totaly let down by AVG, their free anti virus always did a resonable job.
This AVG 8 completly blocked all my network traffic eg X Box and Soundbridge, although it stated that media sharing was allowed, the only way to use was to turn of AVG firewall and revert to Windows Vista inbuilt product. The user interface is appalling, the fire wall user setting require a masters degree just to understand, it total slows your PC, internet pages impossably slow to load even after applying windows patch. Online help is usless, the emailed replies to my queries just come back with loads of GEEK speak which most user will not even understand. I can't understand where the other reviewer got 4mb of RAM used for this program I just upgraded from AVG 7.5 Pro Edition to AVG 8.0. The program has a few new features over 7.5 it now comes with a Anti Root kit, Anti Spyware, Web Shield & Link Scanner. Now if you can run all them including the Anti Virus scanner, e-mail scanner, resident shield & update manager on 4mb RAM then the programmers are good. My current system which is a AMD 64 X2 3800+, 2GB DDR RAM shows in Windows Task Manager that AVG 8 is in total using around 45mb RAM (6 services running) this is after using IE7 and Outlook 6. Had AVG Free Antivirus on my Laptop now for a month or so and discovered that it started up my laptop randomly from Standby in order to look for an update, even though I had disabled all automatic update functions. (I prefer to leave my laptop always on standby, because it takes ages to boot up.)
This resulted in an empty battery every time I came home in the evening, after the laptop had been unplugged for the whole day. I have now removed AVG Free Antivirus and the problems disappeared. Now I am looking for something better. I have never had any problems with the standby function whatsoever with McAFee, but AVG messed things up. Just to point out that AVG have now launched version 8 of this software (also available on Amazon), so don't buy this, buy that!
Obviously, the ultimate solution is to buy a Mac which doesn't need anti-virus software, but if you still have a Windows PC, I recommend AVG. >>More Details |
