This is a point and click adventure. Number 19 in the Nancy Drew series by Her Interactive. It's target audience is primarily young females. There is no violence and no cussing in the game. It is clean.
The controls worked well, it's all mouse-driven.
The story is the weakest part of the game. Nancy flies over to Ireland, drives a hire car to the Castle then proceeds to solve the mystery on the same night! There are other improbables, but it's impossible to mention them without giving away spoilers.
The puzzles were not all well integrated into the story. Mostly doable, some were difficult at least at the senior level. I liked the sheep (fun) and the flying (unusual). Mini games (to earn money) are doll ... Read More:

One of the key things about a good adventure game is that it doesn't bore you by making you repeat the same things again and again. In Shadow Ranch, that's exactly what you have to do, and everything is so exact - no give and take so you can continue if you don't find this or that item. The inventory system is shockingly bad, so you have to go into the inventory, and having chosen an item close the window afterwards.
What's always good in Nancy Drew games are the artwork and the voice acting - no complaints there, but it's the gameplay that's a problem. Even with a walkthru, it's just all to fiddly and serial - and on two occasions I simply missed an item and had no clue what that item might be or where it might be.
I'd never rate the Nancy Drew as the best possible adventure games. They tend to be puzzle heavy - that is, abstract puzzles rather than logical deduction about the real situation. What's always good is the quality of the voice acting, and the way the story progresses. I also felt that Icicle Creek was quite fair in helping you along.
I've seen complaints about having to continuously do the chores - in fact, at least in junior mode this wasn't necessary - occasionally you are prompted to do the meals or do the rooms when you don't bother, but then there's a plot development that makes it necessary at that time. Also the survey you have to fill out at some point - well I just guessed a couple of answers, and it didn't seem to make ... Read More:

As someone who grew up reading Nancy Drew stories I was so pleased that there are now games to play. I bought this and have found it to be Brilliant. Typical mystery and full of puzzles to solve, I will definately start collecting the games now as well as the books.

I thought this ND game was well put together, but lacked the usual thrills and excitement, there wasnt a great deal that could go wrong. Usually the suspect tries to bump Nancy off or gives her a few scary warnings which is far more exciting than being left to solve the mystery in peace ;)
It was a nice touch to have the roadster, and the chase at the end was good, but it was over far too soon for my liking and probably the easiest ND game I've played so far, even in Senior Detective mode!
Still, good games and puzzles, graphics were fair too!

This game was a complete success from my point of view, as the first game I have ever played.
This is why: There were a lot of games, which were easy enough to play, an exciting storyline and wonderful scenery! The white snowy landscapes, the icicle encrusted benches where technically awesome! The storyline was pretty scary too since there is one scene where you get clobbered in the head, one where you get stuck in an elevator and one where you get stuck outside. I learned a lot about the french revoultion and Marie Antoinette. The game has a lot of humor, especially the catastrophic Professor Hotchkiss!!!
Anyway, the only downside would be that, like all other games, it ends.....
Just in time to buy another one! :)

I've played a few of the Nancy Drew adventures and whilst thoroughly enjoyable this one was way too easy. I finished it in a day without having to resort to hints or ever really getting stuck. I really couldn't see the point of including The Hardy Boys. I thought it might have been like Broken Sword where you alternate between the characters but apart from one task where you play one of the boys, this simply didn't happen. Almost all the puzzles could be solved by trial and error even if you didn't know what you were doing. An excellent introduction to the series but not worth buying the CD-Rom. Better suited to downloading for a fraction of the cost from somewhere like bigfishgames.

If you love Nancy Drew games this is one that would look good on your shelf. It is quite funny to swith with Bess once in a while, and still it is a game with Nancy as the main person. A lot of the puzzels are understandable, and not too difficult. And with this game Herinteractive has tried something new, to make rain. It is a great touch that this is not yet an other game with sun or wild weater outside.
It it a fun game, but i wouldn't recomend it as your first Nancy Drew game, because it is kind of just puzzle after puzzle with very little sleuting.
I will give the game 3½ start really (I gave it 3), because the charecters are great, the start is teriffic and there are lots of great things, but the game has too many puzzles and too little ... Read More:
