I have used both Lotus SmartSuite and Microsoft Office in various versions for well over a decade. Both suites are incredibly powerful but for me the application which really makes the difference between the two is Lotus Approach.
I first discovered with brilliant software when it was in its first version, before it became part of SmartSuite. I have used it as a development platform for a wide range of applications for all sorts of clients from lawyers to catering suppliers and from CRM applications to invoicing. It is a staggeringly good piece of software that makes Access seem sluggish in performance and slow during development. I couldn't wait to try this product after purchasing it. I thought it would save me so much time and effort as my typing skills leave a little to be desired. I was prepared to "train" it to my voice and spent a long time doing so. I hit some problems, one being, that no matter how much I trained it to recognise a full stop, it kept putting in four stop instead of . as it should have done. It's accuracy on the whole was pretty good, but when it kept repeating the same mistake after being trained and trained to recognise it, it did become a tad infuriating! I owned a previous version of Viavoice, and found it very useful, and very accurate. After having to wipe my hard drive following a virus attack and losing the installation disk during a house move, I upgraded to Version 10. As reported in other reviews, it would not install, despite some (not very useful) advice from the IBM online help.
The product remained boxed up in a cupboard until I recently bought a new computer. On the off-chance, I decided to try to install it. It worked first time, and after doing the voice recognition exercises, it was working as well as the earlier version did. It really is remarkably good. I trialed this after many years of Dragon (excellent 5 stars) as i've moved to Mac machines. I couldn't install it so contacted Nuance technical support, they were quick in responding as below: WHY DON'T THEY TELL YOU THIS AT THE BEGINNING.....

This review will be of interest to two groups of people: those using Windows 2000, and those who have to enter a large amount of data into spreadsheets, such as accountants. The bad news for those using Windows 2000 is that while the program works very well with Office 2000, most of the menu commands are not available, and the sooner a patch is provided by I B M the better. The good news for people who work with Excel is that this program delivers on its promise to permit easy working with spreadsheets. Without a training session on numbers, ViaVoice effortlessly allows dictation into cells, and the ability to edit them with the help of the mouse pointer. This review has been dictated uncorrected on a IBM ViaVoice Standard release 8. The initial actressy of for the system is 85 per cent - which means I must correct 15 words in every hundred I dictate. I cannot see that I will find it the system useful in practice - you will note the errors in this review - as correcting a document will take longer than a typing in in in the first place. I try it making it to* voice models - one man in my natural speaking voice as recommended and one of using or a degree off over pronunciation. The accuracy is similar for both voice models. Though not quite in the same league as Windows 2000 and real unices, OS/2 Warp is a fine single user desktop OS. There is a surprising array of third party software available for it, still quite actively developed.Installation may be a bit difficult on a modern PC, but drivers are usually available for key components like IDE and graphics controllers.In addition to running native OS/2 applications, it can also run Windows 3.1 apps, and an X server is available, which allows you to compile/run X applications. Limited support for Win32 apps also exists.The bad points are the lack of support from IBM (unless you have VERY deep pockets) and the Serial Input Queue.
